You seem to forget that a back surgery happened late in the offseason, not early in the offseason like you make it seem. It happened after Welker signed with Denver, after Lloyd was let go, and right around the time Hernandez was arrested. So you can say they knew, but they obviously didnt. And lol Shane Vereen is very much something you can depend on. Vereen will have a huge role on this team when he returns. Every time vereen has got a chance to perform, he has performed. 2nd or 3rd time, no answer to Welker?! Back surgery, forgot about that. Vereen has been around 2 seasons, and has basically done squat with a few glimpses of promise with his few opportunities to do anything. ANYBODY can do what he does, ANYBODY. Are you seriously comparing this nobody's value to Welker? lmao And you know it wasn't just Welker. Woodhead, Deion Branch. Okay, Shane Vereen.... www.nfl.com/player/shanevereen/2495473/profile - SAY WHAT?

Divebitchwhat are you trying to say? the Patriots did not say "we are gonna let you go". Welker wanted a lot of money and the Patriots were not gonna give him what he wanted, and more specifically, for the amount of YEARS he wanted. People forget Welker is again, and to get into an agreement in which he is getting paid a lot for four years or so, is bad for the team, financially. another thing people forget is that Welker took a paycut to go to Denver. let's not act like Welker's value was what Denver gave him, because that if far off. He took a BIG paycut to go with Peyton. the Patriots did not want Amendola over Welker. They were TALKING with Dola beforehand I believe just to watch their backs, and luckily they did, because they were able to get him after Welker signed. no one is questioning the reliability of Welker and that he is must more reliable than Dola. But talent-wise, Dola has more to offer. He has more of the route tree than Welker does, too. and at the time, Hernandez was still there, Gronkowski's injury was not supposed to sideline him the amount of time it did, and they had a healthy Dola, Vereen, and others. Vereen is a VERY talented guy. He is not like Woodhead, as he is less elusive, but Vereen has the ability to carry the load for this team if they actually went that direction. if the Patriots knew Hernandez would go to jail, Gronk would be out for half a season, and Dola would be injured, you would have a point. But no one knew this would happen, and I think the Pats are doing a GREAT job considering what they have gone through.

Okay, Shane Vereen.... www.nfl.com/player/shanevereen/2495473/profile - SAY WHAT? First off you bringing up Shane Vereen's NFL stats is like trying to bring up NFL stats for a rookie, or maybe a better comparison is trying to bring up stats of a starting QB who has sat behind another QB for a few years. Vereen has sat behind BJGE, Ridley, and Woodhead. When Woodhead got hurt in the playoff game against Houston last year, Vereen went in and scored 3 TD's. What answer are you looking for on Welker? Ive think my opinion is pretty clear. Wes Welker is a talented receiver, everyone including me expected him to continue his success in Denver. He is 32 ears old, and clearly wasnt part of our long term future. I never wanted to see Randy Moss leave, but when we moved on, we moved on. lol where did I compare Shane Vereen to Wes Welker? You brought up Danny Woodhead I brought up his replacement Shane Vereen, dont twist my words... What does Deion Branch have to do with anything? Deion Branch was nothing but a decoy last year, Brady didnt even bother to look his way when he was on the field. And since we continue to bring up Welker's current success, it would only be fair to mention that Edelmen has more catches and yards than Welker...

In other news Devin Mccourty and Rob Ninkovich were named captains after Wilfork and Mayo were placed on IR. Both are already very respected in the locker room, and Mccourty was a captain 2 out of the last 3 years.
Brandon Spikes has been fined 10,500 dollars for wearing red cleats. He was fined last week for the same thing.
With Kelly, Washington, and Amendola already ruled out, 4 more players will have to be downgraded. Aqib Talib will likely be out this week. Matt Slater will likely miss another week as well.

plax - That is not how I recall it. Now I could be wrong, but Welker's contract....eh, seem to recall he had a 2 year for $10 mil, and he didn't get an offer of any kind from the Pats. Am I confusing that last part with Urlacher, or was it both of them that got no offer? Anyway, the Broncos offered Welker $12 for 2 years. Don't recall what the timeframe was for Amendola, before, after or what. All I know is that Welker was happy there and willing to resign, and I don't recall him asking for much more money. If he wanted a modest raise, he certainly had it coming IMO. If you have any details, would love to hear. But I've never ever heard his demands come up in any interview, TV commentary or article I've ever come across, and I get around. This is something I would surely would have been interested in enough to look into. As I said before, no way Hernandez was foreseen, nor the length of Gronk being out. But 'Dola was totally foreseeable, maybe not to those who claim he is not injury-prone, and I ain't even gonna go there. But IDK how anyone could argue that losing Welker was not a magnanamous blow to Brady and the team, hindsight or not.

Denver's contract with Welker does not seem too bad when you consider he is only making 6mil/year. However, his entire contract is guaranteed, if I recall. So he has 12mil no matter WHAT happens. The Pats did not want to give Welker that much guaranteed money god forbid anything happened to him.
And again, no one is denying what Welker meant to that team and everything. But at the time, there would be no problem putting the ball more into the hands of Hernandez, Gronk, and Dola. Unfortunately, the hand fell apart.

Anyway, Brandon Marshall was fined the same for wearing green ones in tribute to Mental Health Awareness or something like that. He said he will match the fine in donation, which I think is ultra-cool.

Welker wanted more than a 1-2 year deal from the pats. They offered a very similar deal to welker as the broncos. Just less guaranteed. Welker was -not- happy with the Patriots. He was wanting a long term deal and wasn't getting it.
I don't get why a bronco fan even cares. Can't you just be thrilled they didn't sign welker?

I appreciate that you acknowledged he meant a lot, and that you said "only" $6 mil. I agree. But what's gonna happen to him? Does he get any cred at all for having only one (ACL) injury in him career (for which he missed like no time, only a minor setback to like 90+ catches instead of 115)?? No benefit of the doubt? Earned insurance double-check discount? hehe There are a lot of guys making a ton more than Welker with FAR less value in terms of contribution. You can start with Flacco, but I digress. Yeah that hand fell apart. But Welker IMO was the proverbial 'bird in the hand'.

At the end of the day if you are enough of a leader to deserve a captain title, then other players will respect you regardless of your title. A few years ago we dropped the captain patch on the jersey, and I think a couple of other teams have done the same thing.
