I don't shave yet. So your beard probably is bigger. My cousins were flying monkeys. But they made millions off some movie years ago. Obama of Oz or something like that. They don't talk to us anymore. My parents (or who I think is them) could only swing from tree to tree. Whats a hippie? Can they fly high?Larryb.

I'm one who has believed for a LONG time that the name should have been changed. In the early days of the franchise the owner was famously racist, so much that he wouldn't have anybody that wasn't white play for his team for the longest time. In that environment I would get the idea that the name WAS intended to be just as it sounds. There is no doubt that the name is as bad as some of the others listed but for some reason this hasn't been a big deal (as it would be if there were other offensive names being used).
I have thought that the simple, easy fix is to go with the Washington Warriors. Same mascot, same uniform, same colors, same history...etc. Basically it would remain the same with the obvious exception that the name is no longer blatantly offensive. Not to some, but intentionally offensive to all Native Americans. It's bad enough that the team has not seen fit to fix this already, but in the NATION'S CAPITAL...
I mean, D.C. should be leading the charge on all this. Discrimination is discrimination regardless of the color or ethnic background of the person committing it.
Certain things are part of our country's history. There's no changing that. We still have a long way to go here. If anything - what our history has shown us is that we CAN learn from past mistakes and try to get better. Are we perfect? Hell no...but we are striving to be better as a nation and that alone is reason enough for ME to believe. The time has come for the change (actually the time has been here for a while) and if there are OTHER racial slurs that are no longer acceptable in our land, then this one needs to be eradicated also.
I'll step down from the soap box now.

I'm torn on this...if one of the Detroit teams were called the Detroit Ni***** I'd understand. Everyone knows that word is offensive. I didn't know Redskin was offensive. I would understand if they changed it but there would be alot of people who would refuse to go with it. It's been this way from the start. Somebody whose been a fan for 40 years calling them the Redskins isn't going to stop. Just my two cents

All have made some very good points within each post. If it would really make a difference and would stop all the nonsense by simply changing the name of one team, I'd say change the name. But it would not stop there it would only be the beginning of a long list of things to come.
We can't change the history of what has happened not only in our country but in all nations across this great planet we call earth. Many of the mistakes made were hundreds of years before any of us were even alive, yet many cling to a past they had no part of and this is why the problems remain with us to this day. To some extent the only thing history has taught us is how to blame someone else for our mistakes, and we have repeated history over and over again with some of the same mistakes that were made in the past.
It's not that we are unable to make changes that would be better for all mankind it's that some are unwilling to do so. Even though our skin may be a different color and we have come from many different places, when we are cut the blood that runs out is always the same color (Red).
If the human race is ever going to move forward then we must leave the past behind us where it belongs and look to what lies ahead.

Redskin IS NOT a racial slur anymore. Its accepted usage is in reference to the Football team. Even if it is used in reference to American Natives that is far from always meaning it in a derogatory way.
