I'll ask for this to be moved to their team thread after a few days, but to start I'd like it in the General Section to get the most attention.
Anyways, on the main site, there is an article entitled "Redskins should take suggestions on new nickname" found here www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000139763/article/redskins-should-take-suggestions-on-new-nickname
If you want to know my take, look me up, I know most of you and do not fear you knowing my real name, you can find my post under "Justin Ebright".
Anyways to get down to brass tax, my whole point of making this thread relies on what is being said in the comments at the bottom. Personally I do believe the name needs to be changed, and it is in large part do to my family who is native, and my friends who I grew up with that are native. This isn't the first time an issue has arouse around their name, and I've known several people who are of Navajo, Pueblo, or Apache decent who strongly hate the name. It's not because it represents them, it's how it does so. Let me ask you all this, how would you feel based on your heritage if these names where used instead, and please bare in mind I do not mean to offend you, only to use them as a comparison to show the distastefulness of the name. Some will still be partially censored, but I can still make my point that way.
White people: "Nazi's", "Skinheads", "Hillbillies", "Honkies", "White Trash", "Paleface/skin"
Black people: "Nig***", "Wog", "Blackskins", "Slaves"
Asian: "Gooks", "Slant Eyes", "Ch****"
Look, my point is this, yes the country is becoming less bigatory, and a lot of the idiots think it means we are becoming pussies, but for fucks sake, the term redskin has always been a derogatory word, and it's a damn shame it's been able to be around as long as it has. Especially since there are a ton of other names that could represent the "Proud Indian" image the are suppose to have with out pushing a whole subsection of humanity (by this I mean something similar to race, but I really do not believe there are different races of people, there is only one human being, and we are all just variations, but not completely different races or species in which it was originally meant to mean)
We could call them the Warriors, a term which is widely viewed as a term of pride. They could go with the Ancestors, which would assume the tradition of both the team and the nations. Or hell, what about just using the Nationals again and keeping the logo to represent the native nations?
The sad thing is most people still don't see native americans on the same plane as African, European, or Asian decent. They aren't even above the Gay, Lesbian, or Sexual Abusive terms.
You know why most natives hate most non-natives? It's because of the same arrogance that allows them to be treated badly, the same arrogance that allows things like the name, and many other things.
Look I do not intend for this to be a rant, and gladly will read and debate opposing views, but I ask you give good reason why, as I have stated my stance. I just can't believe that as evolved as we claim to be we can't fix a racially insensitive name because people claim we are getting to soft instead of honoring the people it's meant to represent, which is a trait held by many cultures as being one of the most virtuous trait of a warrior, not a weakling.
