After last night, I was thinking a lot about how Cam portrays himself, not only during the game if they are down or in the post game press conferences after a loss, but also how he acts in general... and it is really just starting to piss me off.
First, there is the way he acts when doing interviews. Now, I understand that doing interviews for the media isn't exactly the most enjoyable thing for players, but his demeanor when doing these interviews... mostly, he just comes off as a dick and gives off the impression that he doesn't really care about the things he's talking about.
Then, there's the way he acts during games when things are going like they were last night against the Giants. First off, don't pull that Superman shit when you are down 23-0 with 6 minutes left in the third quarter. Pat your teammates on the back, tell them "good job", and walk back to the sideline with your head up... not walk off by yourself with your head down all dramatic-like and do your Superman pose, showboating to the crowd like you just scored your 5th TD of the game and had been dominating from the start. You're accomplishments aren't bigger than the actual game and don't override what's been happening in the game as a whole. Secondly, if the offense is falling flat or he's making mistakes, he goes back to the sidelines, puts that fucking towel over his head, and sits there sulking on the bench while showing a complete lack of interest about anything else that's going on in the game. Last season, it was something that was chalked up to him just being a rookie and being something even he admitted he needed to work on, but it's apparent he hasn't made that effort. Obviously, after last night's game, it's wearing thin on Smitty as well. His quote:
"I watched D.A. and Jimmy (Clausen), they don't play in 20-something games last year," Smith said Friday, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. "And they get up and they observe and learn and get those mental reps," Smith said. "I told him, 'You can get some mental reps or you can sit on that bench and sulk.' "
"Cam Newton has a very unique opportunity to be a franchise quarterback to an organization that needs one," Smith said. "Statistics don't lie. Athletic quarterbacks, they either excel or they fail. And I told Cam that."
Lastly, there's the way he handles a loss. It's okay to be down, disappointed, upset, whatever. And it's fine to express that mildly. I don't expect him to be smiling and joking and laughing or anything like that after a loss. The way he talks and his whole body language, though... it's like he'd just found out his goddamn mother died!! I'm not really worried about him saying Panther fans should be ashamed of what they saw b/c Steve Smith said the same thing, and honestly, I am ashamed. But acting that depressed about it, just b/c you were so used to winning in college and don't know how to handle yourself when things don't go your way, is getting old. Deal with it like a man.
It's like Smitty said, he has an opportunity to be a franchise QB for an organization that needs one. The team needs a leader behind center that will motivate the players and keep them up when things are going south... not a sulky little diva sitting down on the sidelines with a towel over his head.
