I just went to it this morning. I really enjoyed it, and I got to go for free I am similar to you where I am a fan of star wars but not really a "star wars fan". There is a big distinction between the two IMO. I thought this movie did a really respectable job of of living up to the original trilogy, and I already like it more than the prequels. (I still like the prequels just fine) Like you said this was purely a set up movie, and it did a damn good job of it. It was humourous at the right points, and it was action packed, and the characters were good, and it dropped in nostalgia well. There are some minor issues I have with how things conveniently worked out. Example: Han and Chewie showing up at the perfect time to get the Millenium Falcon and such, but thats Star Wars. I disagree entirely on Kylo Ren. I love the actor they chose for him. I like the fact that his helmet came off and it gave me pause. I was genuinely surprised at what he looked liked. I was expecting him to be some creepy looking scarred up badass, but no he looked like a young gawky adult. This gave him a humanity that the other villains didn't have. Instead of being a 7 ft tall asthmatic monster, or a spikey headed badass alien creature, or some really creepy old dude, He looks like a regular guy! Its refreshing, real life villains don't always look like villains. When he puts his mask on, its easy to just think "Oh he is just another badguy." But when he takes it off you think. "Shit he is just a kid how did he get this fucked up?" He isn't just some monster, there is depth there. I understand what you're saying, but he just isn't intimidating anymore. When he has the mask on, he's a badass and I'm legitimately scared of him. But when it came off, he just wasn't scary or intimidating in any way. I think Ren was done very very well. The opening scene I was like "dang, don't mess with this dude." He was easily as intimidating as Vader, probably more early on. When he froze that laser mid-air...but by the end, he was just an arrogant, tantrum throwing child. Which is fine for his character I guess, but he goes from super intimidating badass to childish weakling pretty much. I think his appearance with his personality gave off vague "Marilyn Manson fan" appearance. I think he gave off the least actor-esque looks, but more importantly, he gets made fun of multiple times in the movie for essentially being a Darth Vader fanboy. On top of that, he only wears the mask because he's a Darth Vader fanboy. I would understand it if in future movies they want to give him a growing up from childhood to adulthood sort of character arc. However, it seems odd to me to see the main villain be a super edgy teenager type.

From some of the reading I have done it sounds like this whole series is meant to be about growth for all the characters. They wish to show it not only from the good guy side, but the bad as well. Instead of giving you an already grown up fully evil character at the peak of his power they want us to watch him grown into it, while we also watch Rey grow into hers.

I wouldn't doubt that they may focus on character growth some, but if so, they've wasted a good amount of time IMO. There was a lot of shoosting and little development. The 4 main young characters, Poe - Buddy with Finn, star soldier in the resistance... Finn - Buddy with Poe, likes Rey, became conscious of New Order's evil (still doesn't wear the traitor tag proudly), misleads people, brave... Rey - Needs a father figure, abandoned by family (misses them), develops relationships quickly (IE, the droid, Finn, Leia, Solo, Chewy, probably Luke), likes Finn, brave... Ben - Vader Fanboy, daddy issues... have fairly simple developments so far. Additionally, each of them is present rather factually, there is rarely anything that complicates the action of the movie or develops the characters in fine detail.
Honestly, I'm perfectly fine with much less character development than what this had (or what a Bond film has) but I think as a whole this film was too much shoosting and too little other things. I think finding a balance that works between shoosting and character is difficult, but there are other ways to go about making an action film and keeping it interesting that don't involve deep character development.

So I watched Transformers: Age of Extinction the other night... what a shitty movie! Like.. the transformers movies aren't exactly known for being top notch quality plots, with great acting and such.. but this was just pure crap! I loved the first transformers movie, and the second and third were each entertaining at least. But this? Just wow.. I don't even know how it made it past editing, so many parts I was sitting there like "wtf is going on and why did that even happen?"
Like, Optimus prime frees the Dino bots to help him fight galvatron and lock down. And then all of a sudden he is fighting grimlock to get him to join their side? He just freed him and walked out into the open with him following.. why are they fighting? The human characters were all so unlikable... the saddest part was a great cast gone entirely to waste! Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammar, John Goodman, TJ Miller, hell even Mark Walberg can be good sometimes.. but man did thus movie let them down.. shitty dialogue, unrealistic interactions.. weird pedophilia with the movies main gotta being 17 and dating a 20 yr old who carries around a lamenated copy of a law that proves he isnt guilty of statutory rape..
All with an almost 3 hour run time.. I wasted too much time watching it. One of the worst movies I have ever seen.

I mean... I thought the humans were atleast as likeable as the previous transformers. the dinobot fight was they had to determine who the alphamale was. Duh. OP had to prove he was the leader to these super powerful beings. And I liked the robot fighting. It was atleast as good as the third one, below the first two IMO. but Dinobots were cool.

I don't think I've been to a movie theater in 5 years but I really want to see Deadpool. 5 years, really? I saw it. It was hilarious, and overall really good, but honestly a little overrated I think. Not that I didn't like it a lot, but it has like an 8.8 on IMDB right now and that's really high for any movie. I don't think any marvel movie currently sits that high.
