Jurassic World and The Martian are the only films I've seen twice in theaters this year and the first time I've seen two movies twice.
I believe I shared my thoughts on Jurrasic World this summer. The Martian was a good film. Funny, intense, and space action. How they pull off those scenes and sequences...impressive. Not a great film overall, but entertaining and one of the best of its genre....

So I watched the new Star Wars last night in XD3D, and I don't like 3D. I kinda watched it in 3D because I had to. But now I'm actually really happy I watched it in 3D. I loved it in 3D actually. The first movie I've ever watched in 3D and liked it, and it didn't give me a headache. I would recommend 3D to everyone. Now to the movie. First spoiler section is my non-spoiler thoughts and the second spoiler will contain spoilers. I probably went in with a tad high expectations for it. It was very, very good. I loved it, but had an issue or two with it. Even though I'm not even a huge star wars fan, though I am a fan, the nostalgic moments were great. And it was great to see Star Wars with today's technology. While it didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for, it's still a really solid star wars movie, and should satisfy all fans. Kylo Ren was a great villain...until he took his mask off. He was awesome until he took the mask off and was a little pipsqueak. They chose a terrible actor for it. It really set me off. It's my only real complaint. I thought he was an awesome villain when he was wearing his mask. Though his story was a little too cliche, and I wish they wouldn't have done what they did with it, it didn't bother me too much. The movie was mostly a set up for the next two, introducing us to new heroes, villains, and characters. And all actors/actresses did a great job, with the exception of kylo ren's actor. I don't know if he's necessarily to blame, but he just wasn't a fit imo. It is still bugging me how much he didn't fit the part. When he took his mask off, I was excited to see what he looked like, but then quickly wished he would just keep it on the rest of the movie. In the final fight, for goodness sakes why was his mask off. It would have been much, much, much, much better if it was with his mask on and with his awesome voice. All in all, it was great. Worth the $13.50 for the XD3D ticket, and I would recommend that one, but it is certainly not essential.

I really enjoyed it, and I got to go for free I am similar to you where I am a fan of star wars but not really a "star wars fan". There is a big distinction between the two IMO. I thought this movie did a really respectable job of of living up to the original trilogy, and I already like it more than the prequels. (I still like the prequels just fine) Like you said this was purely a set up movie, and it did a damn good job of it. It was humourous at the right points, and it was action packed, and the characters were good, and it dropped in nostalgia well. There are some minor issues I have with how things conveniently worked out. Example: Han and Chewie showing up at the perfect time to get the Millenium Falcon and such, but thats Star Wars. I disagree entirely on Kylo Ren. I love the actor they chose for him. I like the fact that his helmet came off and it gave me pause. I was genuinely surprised at what he looked liked. I was expecting him to be some creepy looking scarred up badass, but no he looked like a young gawky adult. This gave him a humanity that the other villains didn't have. Instead of being a 7 ft tall asthmatic monster, or a spikey headed badass alien creature, or some really creepy old dude, He looks like a regular guy! Its refreshing, real life villains don't always look like villains. When he puts his mask on, its easy to just think "Oh he is just another badguy." But when he takes it off you think. "Shit he is just a kid how did he get this fucked up?" He isn't just some monster, there is depth there.

"Shit he is just a kid how did he get this fucked up?" He isn't just some monster, there is depth there. I understand what you're saying, but he just isn't intimidating anymore. When he has the mask on, he's a badass and I'm legitimately scared of him. But when it came off, he just wasn't scary or intimidating in any way. I think Ren was done very very well. The opening scene I was like "dang, don't mess with this dude." He was easily as intimidating as Vader, probably more early on. When he froze that laser mid-air...but by the end, he was just an arrogant, tantrum throwing child. Which is fine for his character I guess, but he goes from super intimidating badass to childish weakling pretty much.

I also understand that arrogant and childish may have been what they were going for with the character. He was still Young and training and fighting personal battles trying to live up to Vader and trying to resist the light and his father. But at first it seemed they were going for intimidating and then decided to switch to childish in the middle of the film. It really put me off.

For me personally thats why I liked it, because it was different from the normal formula. This movie was very much in the likeness of A New Hope. If you go through, most of the major scenes from A New Hope, were recreated one way or another in this movie. However what they did is throw in some subtle and some not so subtle differences, to show that although this is mimicking A New Hope that this was its own entity. One of the biggest differences was that Kylo Ren, isn't your prototypical badass star wars villain. At first you think he is just a carbon copy of Darth Vader with a new name, and a crazy cool lightsaber. But then you begin to see cracks in his armour, he begins throwing tantrums, and as it turns out he is just a young man trying to live up to his grandfather.
Honestly I was disappointed in Ren as a villian when I first saw him, as I fully expected him to be a carbon copy of Vader. Dark, Powerful, Mysterious. Same old same old. But nope, I got something I totally wasn't expecting.
I get that it might be a turn off, if what were expecting was something else, and its what you wanted him to be. But I am so damn excited that he isn't just another Character like most of the Star Wars baddies have been.
