I dont have to tell anybody whats out there nowadays. Society is broken. People dont care about people like they did 40 years ago. We have broken homes and single parent homes. Parents working 12 to 14 hours a day just to make ends meet. If not that ,working 2 or maybe even 3 jobs. People spend way too much time on cell phones and the internet and even though it may seem like we connect more with people, theres a big disconnect there on a personal level. I dont know this kids life, and what if anything was wrong with him, whether or not he had a mental disorder,or whatever his life may have dealt him,but this particular kid was failed somewhere down the line. Video games, movies, TV, even just the sensationalism of the news. Whatever the trigger, the violent repercussions of mental illness are prevalent both IN and OUTSIDE of our schools. WE (in the educational system) try, but there is only so much we can do---- You would "think" that a school would be safe from the horrors of this tragedy, but do parents ever consider that we teachers are dealing with the proliferation of mental health issues affecting your children on a daily basis? Here's just one example-- Last Friday morning (before I heard about this tragedy--cuz I was in class), I had a special education high school student (his "official" label is ED -- emotionally disabled) threaten to punch me in the face because I told him he couldn't spend the entire class period texting/surfing the internet on his phone. (I told him that if he hit me, I would have him arrested. He just rolled His eyes at me---and said, "You can't do that!" Probably thinking because he was a "minor" and I was an adult, that the "law" didn't apply to him. WHERE DID HE LEARN THIS?) Before this encounter escalated, I called the office and had him removed from my classroom. As he was leaving, he spewed a string of profanities at me. Even though this student had no respect for me/my classroom/his classmates or the education system in general, like those teachers at Sandy Hook (and pretty much ANY TEACHER in ANY SCHOOL across this country), if someone came into the school and threatened him, I would do everything in my power to protect him. Because---like the police, firefighters, and first responders every where, I love my job and accept the huge responsibly "you" place on me to be your child's "parent" when you are not able to (or want to/or can't!) Sooo--- all I can say is that I encourage all of you to HUG A TEACHER this week. WE are totally unselfish (and extremely underpaid) public servants, who only want the best for your children-- the next generation. BUT--- like I said, WE can only do so much.....

Honestly you can blame anything you want, whether it be, guns, mental illness, the media, the violence that our culture loves to glorify, parents under or over parenting, bullying, just general stress of school, or work or just of every day life. All of these things play a part for sure, but its just generally how we live in our culture. Our lifestyle is based on, fear, stress and never being good enough no matter what you do. Its zero wonder as to why anxiety and depression are only going up and that every second person is on some form of medication or drug to help numb them to the world. Our society breeds shit like this.
