Why we lost:
We were out coached - Simple enough, Greg Schiano had a better game than Ron Rivera and Rob Chudzinski. Schiano game planned against Cam Newton and our running game perfectly, and Rivera and Chud did NOTHING to help it. It was almost like the Panthers whole game plan was to run zone reads in shotgun for the first half. And once we got a total of -7 yards on zone reads, Rivera and Chud panicked.
Our offensive line played terrible. Amini Silatolu was a dissapointment, he was man-handled by Gerald McCoy (who played great today). Our interioir OLmen were demolished by linebacker blitzes and their DTs. Chudzinski continued to drop Newton back and not throw any screen pass or slants or anything of the sort to stop the defense from blitzing every play. He refused to play the game short and wanted Newton to throw the ball deep while Tampa Bay brung seven guys to blitz and had excellent coverage downfield.
I am very disappointed in Chud, he was a great OC last year and this game, he was clueless. He tried to get fancy with the zone reads and deep passes, while Greg Schiano enjoyed playing dink and dunk football, dominating the time of possesion (37:27 - 22:33 in their advantage, much worse in the first half) and the game.
Players who played well:
Panthers:
Cam Newton - Although it may not seem like it, Cam had a good game. The offensive line was completly terrible, and the play calling was even worse. Cam only had help from four other players (Olsen, Smith, LaFell, and Murphy). He had to do the rest on his own. He was accurate on most passes aside from the picks, one was a bad pass (Black's interception) and the other was a tipped ball that bounced off of LaFell (with Talib's arm in front of him).
Steve Smith - Smith had a very good game, he was Cam's go-to-guy when he (Newton) had time to throw. Smith was open when needed and made plays with his feet. He also got blasted by Mark Barron, shook it off and acted like it was nothing. Steve Smith is a charecter.
Greg Olsen - Early in the game, when running the ball was a failure and the pass rush was getting to Cam constently, Olsen was Cam's best friend, being open on shorter passes and making catches (had one drop, though). I expect Olsen to have a good year, but he will NOT be the only target like he was early yesterday.
Charles Johnson - He applied some good pressure to Freeman, with NO help in the middle. Johnson beat Jeremy Trueblood muiltple times, although hever sacking Freeman.
Frank Alexander - Alexander played well, knocking two of Freeman's passes down at the line in the first Quarter. He didn't play long, but his two tips were impact plays.
Greg Hardy - Hardy played well stopping the run, he had one vicious tackle behind the line (when we continued to let them run for 3-7 yards every play) and made other stops.
Jon Beason - Beason played really well, racking up nine tackles. Really glad to see him back, hopefully our DTs play as good as him (Beason).
Thomas Davis - Davis was around the ball all game, and he took snaps away from Luke Kuechly (who has been great in the preseason). Kuechly did not play well yesterday, while Davis excelled.
Charles Godfrey - Godfrey was around the ball and made some good tackles in the run game, He had a good game, but not great.
Justin Medlock - Medlock may not have kicked the ball out of the endzone, but look at the returns:
6-J.Medlock kicks 70 yards from CAR 35 to TB -5. 34-M.Smith to TB 10 for 15 yards (23-S.Martin).
6-J.Medlock kicks 64 yards from CAR 35 to TB 1. 34-M.Smith to TB 18 for 17 yards (53-J.Phillips, 56-K.Onatolu).
6-J.Medlock kicks 70 yards from CAR 35 to TB -5. 34-M.Smith to TB 18 for 23 yards (56-K.Onatolu).
He is kicking the ball high and pretty long, allowing our ST unit to get to the KR man before he can do anything. Might not kick it out of the endzone, but I'll take a 18 yard return by the opponet than a touchback to the 20. Might not seem like much, but those two yards could be huge.
Buccaneers:
Josh Freeman -
Doug Martin -
Mike Williams -
Carl Nicks -
Gerald McCoy -
Roy Miller -
Michael Bennett -
Adrian Clayborn -
Lavonte David -
Aqib Talib -
Ronde Barber -
