I'm not naive. I know that most of you couldn't care less about my Buffalo Bills, but rather, I'm an interesting poster, so when I post, you're not all hanging on my every word about the Buffalo Bills, but rather you're entertained by me and I've become part of the community we've set up here. After all, this IS the Buffalo Bills we're talking about here: a team that perennially finishes last or second to last in their division. SO, if you don't want to sit through a long opinion piece, read no further. (I won't be offended. I can honestly say there are some of you whose teams I don't really care too much about, but I like reading your posts and your opinions, as we've set up a small and unfortunately dwindling community)
I've actually been meaning to write this for a while.
For me, it started way back in January when my brother picked me up for church, and on the way he told me that the Bills had just signed Rex Ryan. I thought he was joking until he began to expound on the situation. I was fuming mad. I hated Rex Ryan for YEARS! The Jets and Ryan's divorce had been well publicized. He had ran the team into the ground in 2014. I didn't understand the logic of Buffalo signing a defensive czar. Our defense was among the best in the league, but our offense had been crap for what seemed like the better part of a decade and a half. Ryan's track record as a head coach is stingy defense and mediocre offense. THAT'S WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE DANGIT, I thought to myself. All the hoopla touched down in Western New York, the media circus followed, the magazine covers featuring Rex Ryan as a Bill, the grandiose statements about how he was going to take this team to the playoffs. He expected the Bills "to win, and to win big." At times, I wish Rex would have just stfu, because it seemed like his mouth was writing a check his ass couldn't cash.
Then came the roster moves. Rex wanted to "build a bully." He brought in "damaged goods" Richie Incognito, who no other team would touch with a ten foot pole. Then came the trade for Shady. Then we picked up a Pro Bowl fullback in Jerome Felton. Then we signed Percy Harvin. Then after a lot of back and forth with the Dolphins, we signed one of the top pass catching tight ends in the league - Charles Clay. The team was beginning to take shape, and I began to overlook my dislike for Ryan. Maybe he DID have a plan after all.
The Tyrod Taylor thing came out of nowhere and was a surprise to everyone, including Bills fans, but once we saw his potential as a running QB, we immediately fell in love with him. I mean, sure he overlooks a lot of open receivers and leaves a lot of throws out there on the field, but he's accurate, and he can run like an early Mike Vick. Thank you Tennessee for injuring him and once again forcing EJ "First Round Bust" Manuel on us.
We were sold on defense and the run game. I mean, we already had one of the best defenses the past two years running and arguably the best defensive line in the game. With Rex Ryan, this defense had the potential to wreak havoc on the league...right? Wrong. For some reason unbeknownst to anyone but Ryan and his defensive staff, Ryan has run a non aggressive, non blitzing base 3-4 in which he rushes only 3 at all times and drops everyone else into coverage. What about Jerry Hughes and Mario Williams would make you think they'd be good coverage linebackers instead of rushing the passer? After a loss to Cincinnati two weeks ago, even Mario Williams publicly questioned this foolish defensive scheme. The Bills "vaunted" defense has been a "blow by" defense this year. Even mediocre QBs have found success moving the ball against them. Jim Schwartz, the Bills defensive coordinator from last year, who was let go by Ryan when he assumed control of the team because Schwartz ran a 4-3, is GROSSLY out coaching Ryan's 3-4. Teams are having no problem running or passing against the Bills.
The biggest problem with the Bills is penalties. They lead the league in penalties by a landslide, which means the team simply isn't disciplined. They had a 17 penalty game against the Giants. They're getting flagged for a lot of personal fouls. This comes from coaching. Rex obviously is all too content with sitting his guys down for movie night with beer and wings the night before a game instead of sitting them in a film room and having them take notes on their opponents. The Bills are on par to break the record for most penalties committed by a team in a single season. They're shooting themselves in the foot, which we all know is even more frustrating than your opponent beating you.
Injuries started plaguing this team in the preseason and never stopped. In the preseason, Shady, Karlos Williams, Watkins, Harvin, and Robert Woods were all injured. I think we had them all back for the first two games. Since then, Shady got hurt and has had to miss time. Karlos Williams, a surprise upstart rookie runningback suffered a concussion and has missed time. Percy suffered something, the details are sketchy, because he's being sketchy. Don't know if he wants to retire, he won't communicate with the Bills, he won't return to team facilities. I had it in the backburners of my mind when we signed him that he had attitude problems before, but I was hoping he'd be a team player. WRONG. The right side of our line is injured, not that our right guard was doing anything anyways. Kyle Williams got hurt. Sammy Watkins, a punk bitch who's teetering on bust status went to his agent while he was injured had him convey to the Bills that he was frustrated by the lack of balls thrown his way...this while he was injured and after a Bills win. His first game back from injury, he caught a touchdown pass and messed up his ankle really bad, and will now miss more time. For me he's teetering on the bust status because he simply can't get open, he can't handle double teams, and he's always injured. To be taken that high in the draft, you should look like Beckham, not like a fourth round pick.
All in all, at 3-4, this is NOT the team that Rex Ryan promised it would be. Not by a long shot. The defense is weak as hell, and the offense is just a clone of every Bills offense in the past decade and a half: three and outs, third and longs, lucky plays, occasional good drives, putting our defense back on the field for entirely too long. Rex IS the coach I didn't want to begin with.
