What other explanation is there about how bad he is with the draft rumors every year? They guy is pretty much the epitome of "it's draft season, so everything he says is bullshit."
This year, he's laid what looks like an upper-decker in the making.
"The latest I'm hearing now from my sources around the league, who are pretty wired in, is that Marcus Mariota is going to go number one now to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers."
Now, I'm not saying this can't happen. I've thought from the start that Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, and Brett Hundley should be top 5 picks, and could really go in any order. I have no evidence to say it WONT happen. The thing is that it's impossible to prove a negative, and Jaws pretty much did the exact equivalent of this last year:
"Zach Mettenberger is going to be the #2 quarterback in this draft. When you watch him on tape, this guy has an NFL skill set." Jaws had Bortles #1 (correct), but was most boisterous about Mett. He said that he was "very similar" to Joe Flacco as an NFL prospect, which kind of turned out correct, at least in their skill set. Mett ended up falling all the way to round 6, and was the 9th quarterback drafted. The Titans traded up for Mettenberger, so it's possible that he would have fallen another half a round and fall to 10th if the Bears had still taken David Fales, even with Mett on the board for them.
Jaws also said in 2014 that Johnny Manziel wouldn't be drafted in round 1, and that if he were a GM, he wouldn't draft him at all. That proved to be false.
How accurate was Jaws in 2013? Well, he said that Chip Kelly's offense wouldn't succeed and predicted a top 10 draft pick for the Eagles the following year. Philly won the division, basically entirely because of Chip Kelly's work with Nick Foles and LaSean McCoy. Jaws was dead wrong.
Jaws ranked the QBs in 2013 (a historically terrible year for the position) as follows:
Geno Smith
Ryan Nassib
EJ Manuel
Landry Jones
Mike Glennon
Every single one was wrong. The actual order was:
Manuel
Smith
Glennon
Barkley
Nassib
Jaws was quoted as saying that Geno Smith "checked a lot of boxes" and would be a "solid starter" in the NFL. Derp.
Jaws was a hype machine for Sooner quarterback Landry Jones right from the get-go. Here's a quote on Jones from Jaws:
"This might surprise some people, but when I watch Jones, I really like his mechanics. Some guys are just pretty passers. Take former NFL star Warren Moon. He looked good in the pocket and threw a really nice ball. Jones is similarly a fluid passer. He makes all the throws and shows good balance in the pocket. If there's a blemish, I think it's that he missed far too many open receivers."
Landry Jones has never taken a snap in the NFL. In addition, his mechanics were considered to be his greatest flaw. Warren Moon went undrafted for having bad mechanics, and for being black and having the audacity to be a pocket passer. So that was a terrible comparison as well.
Basically, Jaws is wrong a lot more often than he's right. Does that mean that the Bucs won't pass on Winston for Mariota? I've got no fucking clue. But up until he and Mike Mayock suggested it might happen within three days, I was all aboard the Winston hype train. Now I'm at least interested to see what name Goodell announces at #1 overall, although I have the feeling that the Bucs will pull a "Houston 06" and sign Winston to a contract the night before the draft. I hope this happens because it legally puts the Titans on the clock, and they would then get roughly 24 hours to field trade calls on the pick, or just draft the duck.
