So Micheal Sam gets up on the podium for his presser wearing a gay pride pin. And says he would rather talk about football. I don't get it. I don't see why there is something wrong with that. Lots of people wear Breast Cancer Awareness pins, doesn't mean they want to talk about breast cancer when they are at work. He is gay and he is proud to be, so he is wearing a pin showing support to the gay community. That doesn't mean he wants that to be the topic of every football interview he has. I like the way he has handled himself. He doesn't seem to want the drama, he just wants it to be out there so he can love whoever he loves and play the game that he loves.

I just think the young man made a mistake at this time. And its different than a breast cancer pin. At least to me. Being the first openly gay guy in the draft may have its draw back. To me he kind of sent a message that, if you think me being gay isn't going to be a distraction, I will make sure it is. Just the way I perceived it. I think he should not have worn that for his own good right now. I kind of think it would have been like Jackie Robinson giving a presser and then raising his black gloved fist in the air.

I see it a little bit differently. I don't see him wearing a pin as antagonizing anything. Many people wear gay pride pins, and many of those people who wear them are not gay. How many Olympic athletes wore gay pride propaganda in the past few weeks? Whether he is gay or not, gay rights it a huge issue that affects millions of people. If he was running around hitting on other players or something, then yes, he is asking for it, but supporting an issue that has an impact on millions of people, including himself, by wearing a little pin that is being worn by many athletes all across the world, is not asking for anything.

Agreed about the Olympians. But that was to protest Russia's policy. (and my Jackie Robinson thing may have been a little extreme.) I just think that during the evaluation process of rookies, he should lay low with it. It's a matter of money to him. There are GM's out there that are on the fence I guarantee it. And little things may influence them to not draft. I'm just saying I think it may have been a mistake for him.
He's applying for a job.

But he knows damn well that this was the 2nd media event for him since he came out, and a huge one, and he rightfully anticipated the gay questions. It was a show he was proud of who he was, and that he wasn't gonna be thrown for a loop with those questions. It was a smart thing wearing it, IMO. If there are GMs on the fence, they already know. Would you rather have something bizarre like Manti T'eo? Oh, nevermind. lol

I know they already know. I'm just saying if I was GM and was on the fence as to whether he would be a distraction, I would maybe fall off the fence on the side of "I don't need this"
This is football remember and full of probably the most macho testosterone filled locker rooms in the world. And he is applying for a job. I personally would not draft him because for 1) he's not all that. and 2)don't need the distraction. It is a business. I would not go to a job interview and talk politics, religion, abortion, or sexual orientation. As a matter of fact Legoland was very strict with their policies. You could be fired if you said something that offended a guest. Even if the guest was a racist bigot.
It's business, not a political platform.

Craig, I think you're talking about him being openly gay to begin with, whereas I'm just addressing the gay rainbow button thing, which I just saw as a re-assertion of his pride and openness. The cat's already out of the bag. And I totally respect him and his judgement to be the one to come out with it, and handle it with class, and on the toughest platform in the world, the NFL. Gay men are SOOO much more rampant than the openly flagrant gays out there, and the misconceptions, especially of young males are many, and with the stereotypes, fears and self-doubts perhaps. They shouldn't have to live a lie. And I believe that Michael Sam wants nothing more than to get passed all this and focus on football. Sadly as you said, he ain't all that, and I see his draft stock dropping due to his performance. Still think he'd warrant @ 5th or 6th round pick.

This thread just wont die. Im going to find me an "Im Straight" pin soon, and where it everywhere I go. Why should the thread die? As long as people want to discuss it, it should keep going. Since you are still posting, I assume you still want to discuss. He's not wearing an "I'm Gay" pin, he is wearing a pin that supports gay rights. Many people, straight and gay, wear those pins. To counter, you could wear a "I don't support gay rights" pin if you really wanted to, but most people aren't willing to walk into a room wearing a pin like that. Or to do the equivalent, you could wear a "I support straight rights," but that would be kind of pointless since there are no rights that are withheld from straight people on the basis of their sexual orientation.
