Hard as that may be to believe in the aftermath of his five-interception, zero-point performance against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, it is a possibility. Privately, several Giants executives have indicated that an extension for Manning is coming — if not this offseason, then definitely next since his current seven-year, $106.9 million deal expires at the end of the 2015.
And because he will count for a ridiculous $20.4 million against the 2014 cap — which is expected to be somewhere between $125 million and $130 million — the consensus of the agents and NFL executives surveyed by the Daily News over the last week is that the Giants would be better off doing it sooner than later. And everyone surveyed expects the deal to be at least $20 million per season with $40 million-plus guaranteed.
The Giants would probably prefer a shorter extension. But if they have to stretch it to five years for cap purposes, the $100 million mark will surely be hit.
“This wasn’t his best year,” added an NFL team executive. “But he’s still one of the best in the league. He’s a true franchise quarterback. Everybody can see that.”
“Seventy-five percent of the league would easily pay Eli $20 million plus to get him right now,” one NFL agent said. “If you have a quarterback, you have a chance.”
Several team sources insist there has been no wavering on the Giants’ long-term belief in Manning, especially since he’s only 32. Yes, he’s had a miserable season, but a few weeks ago in an interview with the Daily News, co-owner John Mara indicated he still had faith in his quarterback.
