1.19 Justin Pugh, OL, Syracuse
~ When the pick was announced, I was furious because we passed on high value guys, such as Sharrif Floyd and Xavier Rhodes. And Pugh was not regarded as a 1st round pick until Mayock had him to the Giants (seriously, amazing job Mayock) the day before the 1st round. After cooling off and looking at Pugh's tape and what not, I actually enjoy the pick quite a lot. The Giants saw the run on OL in the 1st round, and if they wanted to get quality guys, we had to pull the trigger early, which we did. Pugh can play ANYWHERE on the OL, which is why I have him as a OL and not OT or OG on the pick above. He is very versatile and can step in anywhere if needed. He is being called a young David Diehl (when he was good). If that is true, this pick is amazing, as Diehl was a top guy for us for many years.
Pick Grade: B
2.17 Jonathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
~ This pick was a little odd to me when it was made. Again, I was a little upset when we passed on Arthur Brown, who I could not believe fell that far, and with our need at LB, was a perfect fit. Again, I took some time to look at his tape and scouting reports and all of that stuff, and this pick was also pretty good. He is a "big boy". and a wide one as well. He is amazing at stopping the run, and can penetrate the OL to get to the QB. I would have given this pick a higher grade, but we have too many guys at DT in Joseph, Jenkins, Patterson, Rogers, Kuhn, and Austin. Add Hankins to that, and we have 7 DTs on the roster, with almost all good enough to be in the rotation. I see him being high in the rotation, however, behind Joseph and Jenkins. And with almost all of our DTs on their contract year, Hankins will start soon enough.
Pick Grade: B-
3.19 Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
~ Cha-Ching! I wanted Moore as a possibility in the 2nd round, so to get him in the 3rd, was amazing to me. Moore was a top 10 prospect earlier in the year, but he dropped due to his poor combine as well as off-the-field problems. We have Tuck and JPP as our starting DEs, so Moore can be groomed behind them for the year, and start next year. He is only 20 years old as well, so he can easily mature and add some frame.
Pick Grade: A+
4,13 Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
~ So many mixed emotions on this pick. We passed on Khaseem Greene, who we NEEDED to have at LB. But we got an AMAZING value pick in Nassib. However, we lost a 6th to get him. Eli Manning never gets hurt serious enough to sideline him, so I did not see the point in losing picks to get a guy who won't see the field. On the other hand, Eli is getting on the older side, and it is always good to have a solid back-up option. And I also believe that Nassib will be used for trade bait in the future. Remember, many mocked him 8th OVERALL to BUF, so good value here.
Pick Grade: B
5.19 Cooper Taylor, LB/S hybrid, Richmond
~ This is where Jerry Reese usually takes a flier on a project guy and hopes for the best. They did it with Robinson last year, and this year it is Taylor, IMO. Taylor is 6'4"+, which is crazy. He also had medical problems, which lowered his stock. His natural position is safety, but it would surprise no one to see him play a hybrid role or LB, exclusively. Good pickup, overall, and can come out big if he tries his best.
Pick Grade: C+
6TH ROUND PICK TRADED IN PART OF RYAN NASSIB DEAL
7.19 Eric Hermon, OG, Ohio
~ This guy has a mean streak, according to many. The Giants need guys like him, as last year we were soft on the OL. The Giants wanted to get better in the trenches, and they did that with getting 4 guys on the DL and OL. The Giants have a lot of young guys on the OL now (Pugh, Hermon, Mosley, McCants, Brewer).
Pick Grade: B-
7.47 (compensatory selection) Michael Cox, RB, Massachusetts
~ Sure, why not. This was a project pick. Cox is a big back, and might be able to do good if he can use his size to his advantage. I think we should have went Kevin Reddick (who I hope the Giants get as a UDFA now), but oh well.
Pick Grade: D+
