While in the locker room waiting for practice to start, my friend and I came up with a stupid but fun idea. What if the NFL had JV teams? Here is the list of the changes it would make:
- Teams keep all 90 players they originally have. 53 make it to varsity, the other 37 go to JV.
- This would give the unproven players a chance to prove themselves, and preseason would be eliminated completely.
- If a team feels like varsity backups could use some playing time, they could play in JV games 4 times a year.
- When the varsity travels, the JV play at home, and if the varsity stays, then the JV travels. JV plays on Saturdays.
- It could make some extra money
- The JV players get paid a minimum 100k, and maximum 200k.
- This means there would be a home game every week. For the people that can't make the travel or want to get into a cheap NFL game. Sales revenue would probably make half of what current preseason sales make, but it could put a few bucks in the team's pocket.
- Since preseason is eliminated, the NFL adds 4 more weeks into the regular season. 3 games, 1 vs divisional rival each. The other is a bye-week.
- This way, there are no splits in divisional rivalries, which causes more drama and suspense which could lead to more ticket sales/TV ratings.
- The extra bye-week would give the teams the extra break that they need from playing too many games in a row.
EDITS:
- JV players can only play up to 5 years of NFL experience. From that point on, they must be upgraded to varsity, traded, or released
