It's somehow only dawned on me just know that the previous season's thread is no longer appropriate. But that's interesting, because it never was for any part of 2016. We were eliminated long before 2016, and we didn't play a meaningful snap this year. But the team is changing, and it's changing for the better. That's why this year, I'm happy to name the new thread 2016-2017 season, because I know this team is going to be playing in January next year.
The first order of business is hiring a new head coach and general manager. The team has already promoted interim president and CEO Steve Underwood to a full time position. Steve, along with a panel of three other Nashville front office members, are currently interviewing GM candidates, who will be allowed to choose their head coach, while the CEO will only maintain veto power over the choice, not executive power.
This week, the Titans are looking at GM candidates, and it holds that the GM decision will be made very soon so that the Titans will be ready to interview coaches as soon as wild-card weekend is over, and names like Hue Jackson and Darrell Bevell could potentially be available.
The Titans are, as such, out in front of other teams hiring GMs. Here are the connected names so far:
Marc Ross, Giants scouting director
Blake Beddingfield, current Titans VP of player personnel. He's the inside hire. Drafted Mariota. Also draft Green-Bust.
Not Eric DeCosta, who had denied multiple interviews, including from us. He's staying in Baltimore.
Jon Robinson, Director of Player Personnel for Tampa (who would presumably higher his former boss, Jon Gruden, as head coach)
Chris Polian, Jags DPP. Ties to Peyton Manning. Other than that... he built the Jags. That's a major factor in the minus column.
Not Cincy draft guru Mike Tobin, who is staying in Cincy
Jimmy Raye III, scouting director, IND.
We know that these seven people were on the original list of 14 finalists. There are seven other finalists. I expect the next GM is someone on this list.
One of those GMs will be interviewing a sub-list from an original list of 150 HC candidates that the Titans brass developed after firing Ken Whisenhunt. Here's just a short list of guys who might be on what remains of that list.
Name we know are on the list:
Mike Mularkey, current Titans HC
Ray Horton, Titans DC
Dick LeBeau, Titans assitant DC
Sylvester Croom, Titans RB coach
Josh McDaniels, Pats OC
Chip Kelly
Jon Gruden
Hue Jackson, Bengals DC
Derrell Bevell, Seahawks OC
Mike Shula, Panthers OC
Names I hope are on the list:
Tom Coughlin
Sean Payton, Saints HC
Brian Kelly, ND HC
Urban Meyer, OSU HC
Adam Gase, Bears OC
Jim Schwartz
David Shaw, Stanford HC
Rob Chudzinski, Colts OC
Mike Shanahan
