As of right now my beloved Riders have started the season off 0-8. Out of all the games we should have won 3 of them and another 4 were in right until the end. Only one game did our team fully deserve to lose.
As of right now we are the most penalized team in the league, we have taken a ton of bad penalties at the wrong times. We have had more points taken off the board due to penalties than anyone else. One game we had 17 points taken away because our players were undisciplined and we lost that game by 4..
This has been a hard year for the Riders.. Our starting QB who is an all star QB in the league went down half way through the first game with a torn achilles and was done for the season. It hurt but luckily we had brought in a veteran backup this year for just such a scenario. He was doing great for us and our offense was actually leading the league in yardage while he was in, he then tore his pectoral muscle on his throwing side and is likely done for the year.
So now we are down to our 3rd string rookie QB Brett Smith, he played for Wyoming and had a pretty productive college year but not much was expected from him. He is showing well though and bodes nicey for the future which is nice, but we are still struggling incredibly to score, or shut down teams when it really counts. We can't close out games and we still take penalties at bad times.. Its been a long year, with a ton of injuries.. 3 of our starting DBs went down, an all star MLB who we traded for went down for the season, then our rookie who was replacing him is out for at least 6 games now.
However interesting things are happening now. This is the second year in a row that our starting QB has gone down with a serious injury and he is getting up there in age now, so the Riders have begun the hunt for our next QB. Our GM has brought in a bunch of new young QBs lately, a few who are actually pretty big names.
We have signed Blake Sims, former Alabama QB, and Taj Boyd, former Clemson QB. I am very intrigued as to how they will fit our game. For a little while Boyd was being considered as a top prospect for the NFL, and there was talks of him being a high first round pick, so I know he has some talent, it will be interesting to see how he translates. All in all its always nice to see prospects from bigger Schools come to the CFL!
So right now this season is looking like a wash, most people are calling for the coaches head even though we won the cup only 2 short years ago under his leadership and are having some hard times with the loss of our all star QB. I like our coach a lot and I don't think we should can him just yet, I think our team can bounce back from this! We are still a strong team, it shows when 6 of our 8 games have been lost by 4 points or less, 2 of which have been taken to overtime. This year is bleak, but I really think the future looks bright and I think our coach and GM can lead us back to the promise land if given some time and faith!
