The play-calling this season did not maximize the specific talents of the players on their roster. 
Kaep was kept in the pocket waaay too much-- and for too long-- especially with an OL decimated by injuries. He can throw a pretty long ball, when he has to; but he's not a Brady-like QB who can stand in the pocket and dink-dunk down the field 5-7 yards at a time. Kaep is better running for those 5-7 yds. He did a lot more rushing the last couple of games, and the whole offense looked improved.
Why was Frank Gore all but invisible the first half of the season?
Even the mild-mannered man, himself, was begging coach to give him the ball in the media. I don't know what took them so long, but they finally did-- and Gore quietly proceeded to rack up the yards, on his way to an eighth 1000-yds rushing season.
IMO-- Carlos Hyde was the RB steal of the draft. Too bsd SF hardly let him on the field. (I guess there's always next year.

If SF would have maximized the talents of the players on their roster-- a steady dose of Gore/Hyde as a 1-2 punch early in the season, and let Kaep add at least a 5/60 rush line every game-- even with the OL issues, they would have won more games.
I just hope the new coaching staff figures this all out long before next season starts.
