Notes:
First team:
-Marcus Mariota had another good outing. He looked accurate and professional once again, and this time that came with no turnovers. While that caused rave reviews from the lazier journalists out there, I actually thought Mariota performed slightly worse, even on a small sample size, than compared to week 1. I loved to see Mariota's mobility on display and his bootleg completion to Stevens was a masterpiece. Still, his misused pump fake and near interception on his final rep left a bad taste in my mouth. Not a bad day overall with a brand new line configuration against the best front four in the league.
-Bishop Sankey stole the show in the fourth quarter. He looked like the bruising power runner Titans fans saw last year on Monday night against the Steelers. He busted off 18 and 19 yard runs on the first two drives including a highlight reel broken tackle. Barring an injury, his job is completely safe. David Cobb will still get some reps this season, but it's good to know I was right all along that the Cobb media hypefest was not based on reality.
-Jason McCourty needs surgery on a lingering groin injury. While Perrish Cox scored a touchdown in his absence this week, #1 still a huge gap in the defense. The secondary looked dreadful against Matt Ryan and Julio Jones without JMAC. Who know what Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson will do week 1. Coach Whiz is optimistic McCourty will be back by then, but I'm not. That's my biggest concern going forward.
-Team run defense, spearheaded as usual by #99 Jurrell Casey, was stout. Tre Mason wasn't effective even with a line that is built to run block.
-The offensive line got a lot of credit for better play this week after switching Byron Bell to left guard, starting Poutasi on the right, and benching AndY Levitre. The group was okay, and they improved while going against an incredible pass rushing group. Still, Mariota was running for his life on a few plays, which made him look great, incidentally, because of his skills on the run. Run blocking looked great, and Chance Warmack really rebounded from a rough week one.
Backups:
-Zach Mettenberger had another good outing. His touchdown pass to Chase Coffman in the back of the endzone was a thing of beauty. It traveled less than a foot above the defender's hand and just past another Ram. Mett looked good overall with other big completinos to Hakeem Nicks and Dorial Green-
Beckham, both of whom looked great against the Rams backups.
-Yawin Smallwood has been handed a backup role at ILB behind Avery Williamson with Zaviar Gooden on the PUP list with a torn hamstring. He didn't jump off the tape this weak, but he stayed healthy and went 2/2 tackling.
-Still no winner in the KR battle. Ford, McBride and McCluster all looked marginal. Hopefully that question will be answered next week.
-Not only do we know who our starting RB is, the depth is pretty clear now too. David Cobb struggled and Antonio Andrews has now played well for two straight games. The former WKU star appears to have jumped the rookie from Minnesota momentarily, although I think that Cobb will be the #2 back by the end of pre-season. Dexter McCluster didn't provide anything in the run game and dropped a wide-open MM8 touchdown strike. His spot on the roster probably isn't in jeopardy, but his touches certainly are if he doesn't improve.
