Well -
- Y.A. Tittle (HOF) and a couple more from the Million Dollar Backfield are missing...How do you miss Joe "The Jet" Perry (HOF) and Hugh McElhenny (HOF)? - Leo Nomellini (DT) and Bob St. Clair (RT) both HOFers also missing
And Brett Favre was NOT...NOT as good as Montana. Numbers be damned, Joe is one of top five QBs of all time. Brett? Top Ten probably, but not top five. Joe had TWO OF the greatest teams of all time in 1984 and 1989. I like Brett alot, but he's not quite to the level of Joe.
Also, Steve Young...would not be the starter on this team. LOVE Steve, but there was a reason Joe was the starter over him. He earned it and kept proving he should be until injury and age forced the team to make the change.
I still don't know why all these teams have TWO Punters and TWO kickers...and why is there such disdain for anyone older? Different game, sure, but is that enough to say those guys would NEVER be able to make it in today's league? I'm not buying that one.

Ask 100 diehard football fans who's the greatest QB of all time (that actually saw these people play) and at least 90 will say Montana. The rest will say Peyton or Brady, and maybe one will say Young or Johnny U. I know, I do this sort of thing in bars (especially sports bars) all the time. Same deal with Jerry Rice. They don't even stop to think about it, they just automatically say his name.
Kellen Winslow (big daddy, not little big ego) led TE's until around the time Gonzo set the yardage record, and now it's mostly all him, with a few others thrown in for flavor.
RB is a lot more fragmented. I, among a number of others, refuse to believe Emmitt was the greatest...he just had pretty much the greatest o-line. Personally, I lean toward Jim Brown...while I didn't see him play (aside from very occasional highlight films), I know how much of a physical freak and how dominant he was.

TE's is always a tough one, because some came along after the passing game exploded and some were at the forefront of it. For me, I'd go with Winslow SR, Ozzie Newsome, John Mackey, Mike Ditka, then whoever else. I understand Tony Gonzalez has the records NOW, but again, he played in a PASSING league, more than any other TE. That has to be taken into account, and though I would agree he's great, Kellen Winslow Sr was also a big guy at 6'5" 250 and ran a 4.4. Ridiculous. WR it's pretty easy, though the rest of that top five would vary considerably from person to person. QB also varies, though Johnny U, Montana, Staubach...to me all have to be in there. RB to me is pretty easy also. Payton and Jim Brown are 1 and 1A and then there's everyone else. I agree that Emmitt was GAHREAT but I can't put him at the top of that list, though I personally believe as far as ABILITY goes, Dorsett was the better Dallas RB (yeah, I know I'm in the minority on that one). Barry would also have to be in the top five. Where, though...that's another question.

As a Bears fan who have seen more than his fair share of Favre you quite simply are dreaming!! Favre is without question better than Montana!!! Have you ever even seen Montana play? (I know I haven't, I was wasn't born yet when he started, and I was too young to understand football before he finished playing). Favre isn't a better QB than Montana. My football memories go back to 1985 so yes I did see a lot of Montana in his prime as well as all of Young and Favre's career. Elway, Young, and Favre were all similar. Elway had the strongest arm of those 3. Young was the best runner. Favre was the best combination. Montana was more similar to Dan Marino, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning. A little more mobile than any of them but still what I'd call a pocket passer.
My top ten 1. Manning, 2 Brady, 3 Favre, 4 Young, 5 Montana, 6 Elway, 7 Marino, 8 Brees, 9, Moon, 10 Rodgers

Joe Perry had some very nice seasons for the Niners in the 1950's. But not any better than the years Garrison Hearst had from 1997-2002. Considering the difference in league quality. I have to give the edge to Hearst. Hugh McElhenny was Perry light.
Leo Nomellini from what I can tell seemed to be a solid player. Was he better than Justin Smith or Charlie Krueger? Krueger played 24 more games with the 49ers so that might be enough to give him the nod. Justin Smith spent the first 7 seasons with the Bengals but since coming to San Fran has been as dominating as a player can be. When adjusting for LQ I'm pretty sure Smith would have been even more dominating if playing in the 50's while Nomellini might have struggled against linemen who are all 3-5 inches taller and 50-80 lbs heavier than himself.
Bob St. Clair or Harris Barton?
Already covered the Favre thing. Montana was the established QB when Young came to the niners. If Young had been the Established QB when Montana was drafted he wouldn't have replaced Young either. Just a simple matter of timing.
I believe that every position should have a backup in case of injury.

I'll go with sweetness followed closely by Barry Sanders. Didn't see Brown play but he's probably top 3 from everything I've heard.
