m.espn.go.com/rpm/story?storyId=10469205&src=desktopThey are bringing the old #3 back out this Sunday for the Daytona 500. Austin Dillon is going to be driving it. I causally watch NASCAR (meaning I run in the room to watch replays of awesome wreaks) so I know why the number 3 means so much. But I am not a big fan of the sport so I have no feelings either way on whether or not it should be used again. What are your thoughts? Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using proboards

It was earnhardts number. Without teams there is a kind of unity among drivers. It'd be like a packers QB wearing the #4.

Dale Earnhardt is a legend in NASCAR, a folk hero to his fans, and even to people who weren't his fans. His driving style on Sunday and his living style the rest of the week was representative of his fans. His death in the 01 500 just made him even more immortal. Jeffb is an Earnhardt fan, he'd give a better take on it, i'm a Jeff Gordon fan. The only time i've ever seen my dad cry was after Dale died, a piece of every single #3 fan died that day, its a hole that can never be filled, I see it in my dad. There is a different attachment between the 3 and Dale's fans than there is to most anything else in all of sports. Its a unique enigma. At the races people didn't hold up a 4 and 3 for Petty, or a 2 and 4 for Jeff, but they held up #3's on the 3rd lap, some still do. I remember, as a Jeff fan, being at TMS in 02 holding up 3 fingers on the third lap. The #3 is sacred ground for many. Its a cherished and enshrined symbol of NASCAR's greatest icon. At the same time, Earnhardt wanted Childress to keep running the number when Dale retired, sadly circumstances didn't play out that way.

I just think its a total shame that ANYONE else is driving the number 3. Dale was a legend for sure and there is no one like him. He reinvented racing. Noone can drive a car like he could. And I havent seen anyone that can ever hold a candle to him. If you werent a fan then you might not quite understand, but T-Bone does. He just about hit it on the head.
And hes right about the fans of other drivers. They KNEW what Earnhardt meant to racing. They respected him, even though they might not be one of his fans or maybe even didnt like him, they still respected him.
He was truly a legend to his sport.

I was not a fan of racing then. Didn't pay attention. But I payed enough attention to know what was going on. And his sudden crash/death was shocking. RIP Intimidator.

The only time I was alright with Jeff losing a race was when Harv beat him at Atlanta in 2001. At the time our sport needed so much healing. Even today NASCAR is not fully healed, nor will it ever be.

I know I may sound like an old-time Earnhardt fan, but I have been a fan of Jeff Gordon since I can remember in 1997. Jeff and Dale had one of, if not the best, rivalry in all of sports, so for a life-long, diehard Jeff fan to say these things speaks volume to what Dale meant, and still means, to NASCAR. He's the greatest of all time.
