But it wasn't a problem in Mizzou's locker room, so why would it be a problem in an NFL locker room? (where the players are older and generally more mature than college players) Because someone is older doesn't mean they are more mature, especially when it comes to things like people being gay. In fact I would assume there are more people in the NFL who are homophobic than in college because of the times they grew up in. In the past 5 to 10 years the "pro-gay" movement has become a far bigger deal than it was in the 90s or even early 2000s. We have been exposed more to openly gay people on TV, in movies and all sorts of places in our years of growing and trying to find ourselves and in these years it is far easier to accept these things as we are questioning so much of life as it is. Not saying there aren't older people who are accepting of it as well, just that the % is smaller as they were exposed to less of it. Its like how a higher % of people every year became accepting of black people the more they were exposed to them. You get used to the differences you are exposed to.. Very true. Good points all around. But I wasn't saying that every NFL player is more mature simply because of age. Just that, not always, but generally, people do become wiser with age. I agree with you that that might not particularly be the case for some issues though, like this one.

The Eagles locker room didn't seem to have too much of a problem with Cooper's incident and seemed to function just fine.
If I were a GM who liked Sam as a prospect already then I'd be pretty happy to know that he could fall to them or even get a better bargain for him in the later rounds.
Yeah it sucks that he may be out of a lot of money in his rookie contract because of this but that's nothing hard work wont fix. Teams have to deal with diversity in the locker room all the time, I don't see why this would be any different.
If they must, allow the players and staff to have a vote for whether they think they'd be okay with him being on the team. But it shouldn't matter either way because they have to work with people they possibly don't like regardless. It should come down to if the guy can play, and how Sam goes about dealing with coming out. If he just goes about his business now and up until the draft then great.

craig440 I don't see anything wrong with finding homosexuality gross. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I personally don't care to watch two guys make out or anything like that either. But because I don't like it and you don't like it, does that mean they should have to keep it behind closed doors? There is a lot of stuff that goes on in the world that I don't like to see, but so long as it is not causing harm to people, it makes a lot more sense for me to close my eyes than to tell an entire community to stop doing what they do. I agree the parades seem a little absurd with some of the stuff that they do, but people celebrating anything tend to go a little crazy. Think of how ridiculous sports fans look when they go to watch a game. Guys go shirtless and paint their faces and bodies and yell and scream at the top of their lungs. Women get paid to dress up in underwear and dance around, singing songs to inspire their teams. The gay pride parade just looks weird because it is different to us, but from an outsider it's probably not much different than watching a football game. And one thing that I don't like to hear is, "if they want to have sex, go ahead and do it behind closed doors". People treat it like homosexuality is purely a form of sex... but it is a lot more than that. What if someone told you that you couldn't show any affection to your wife, unless it was in the privacy of your own bedroom? That includes things like holding hands, kissing her in public (not just making out, but any sort of loving kiss), etc. When you love someone you want to be able to show affection towards them in many different ways, not just by banging on a park bench. Gay people ultimately want what everyone else wants, to be able to be themselves. Sure there are some who are over the top, just like there are some gun fanatics who are over the top and some religious people who are over the top... but that doesn't mean that no gay people should be allowed to be gay in public. Regarding the guy talking with a lisp, I never understood that. I don't get why when someone comes out, they automatically start talking differently. Maybe it's just an attempt to make sure people know they are gay? For guys who don't know how to meet other gay guys, maybe the best way is to be as flamboyant as possible so they notice you. There are lots of different areas where people talk differently based on the group they are in, too. The difference between the way I talk when I am at work, dealing with trades guys is a lot different than the way I talk when I am at home with my fiance, which is just as different as the way I talk when I am with my grandma. I get that you have had some negative experiences with friends and homosexuality. Just because your friends dated lots of girls or even got married, doesn't mean they 'turned' gay later in life. A lot of people don't understand their feelings for a long time and date the opposite sex because it is what's expected. Others are probably just afraid to come out because of the social implications, so they date women as a cover. But your two examples aren't proof that homosexuality is a choice, not something you are born with. I am not trying to attack you, I'm not mad at you for what you said, and I still respect you as much as I always have (which is quite a lot.. would be even more if you weren't a Chargers fan). My goal here was just to address some of the issues that I disagreed with you on. Regarding Sam coming out, I say good for him. People were going to know eventually and it's better coming from him now rather than mid-season when the media leaks it or something. This allows a team to prepare for the effects. It will absolutely hurt his draft stock because some teams won't want to deal with the inevitable issues that will arise from players who don't want him there. Is he a hero? I don't think so. I think that term is over used today. But I respect his honesty and courage.

I gotta disagree a bit here. I realize that when I say something agains todays views of society it considered hate speech. But I dont hate ..anyway sue me.
I dont see a person in sports coming "out of the closet" as anything but normal for our society. I definitely don't see his stock going down.
I for sure dont see it as courageous or at least no more courageous than a player who disagrees with it-that persons stock will go down.
Its not like homosexuality is an uncommon thing anymore. Without the media and forums nobody would even talk about it outside of a church.

I'll respond a little at a time. First to this from Plax
You ARE saying gays are evil. You are saying that if we allow something, being gay, that is evil, then we become evil. Your view right there is part of the reason why you don't see more people admitting it - because it is view of those people who bring people down and don't accept them for who they are. And you cannot say that gays being evil was not your point because you brought up a pretty irrelevant example about one of your friends dying because he got aids from being gay. Do you not see how ignorant that statement was? You act like girls do not have aids? He could have very well gotten it from a girl and died when he was experiencing with guys. You are letting a few of your personal experiences get to you and it is forcing you to judge an entire community of people.
I knew I would screw up on some of this. I didn't mean gays are evil. I have a customer who is gay and he recently lost his partner. He's openly gay and a very cool guy. I like him a lot. He doesn't talk about it regularly. I really like him. So my evil comment was taken out of context. My fault because I can see how it sounded like that. I'd like to take that statement back because it truly is not how I feel.
And my friend who died of Aids, I did not say it was because he was gay. I know he could have gotten it from a girl or even a blood transfusion. I don't know. I just said that is how he died.
I also know that Sam coming out will cause lots of media attention and that is to be expected with the first openly gay football player. I just hope someday its not an issue. So I do accept people are gay, I'm just tired of all the attention. It will calm down someday I'm sure. Maybe not though as racism seems to never go away.
An example. I got up this morning and Marlene had bought an Enquire. Its sitting on the coffee table. First thing I see this morning is that Dolly Parton married her girl lover and Tennille or Captain and Tennille left the captain for a woman. Then I turn on TV and it was on ESPN. The first story was about the Russian skater who is gay and won the gold. The next half hour was about Sam. So what I'm trying to say, in maybe a poorly written way, is if no one made such a big deal about it it wouldn't be such a big deal. I sometimes have a problem expressing my true feeling in type.
