I did this once on one of the other proboards I'm on thought ya'll might like this.
Who started it ?
Modern fantasy football can be traced back to the late Wilfred "Bill" Winkenbach an Oakland businessman and a limited partner in the Oakland Raiders.
Where did it happen?
In a New York hotel room during a 1962 Raiders eastern cross-country trip,Winkenbach, along with Raiders Public Relations man Bill Tunnel and Tribune reporter Scotty Starling, developed a system of organization and rule book, which would be the basis of modern fantasy football.
Did you know it had exclusive membership?
Winkenbach organized the inaugural eight teams which consisted of individuals who met one of the following qualifications
1.)An Administrative affiliate of the AFL
2.) A journalist with direct relation to pro football
3.) Someone who has purchased or sold 10 season tickets for the Raiders 1963 season
Roster positions
Each roster consisted of the following in the GOPPPL (Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League) 2 quarterbacks, 4 halfbacks, 2 fullbacks, 4 offensive ends, 2 kick/punt returners, 2 field goal kickers, 2 defensive backs/linebackers and 2 defensive lineman.
How it expanded
In 1969, Andy Mousalimas, an original creator of GOPPPL and participant in the inaugural draft, brought the game to his sports bar, the Kings X in Oakland Ca. where he added another couple of leagues. When the patrons of other Oakland and San Francisco bars visited for trivia contest they soon learned of the game and passed the word about it. Due to the time consuming nature of the game's scoring it was difficult to pick up and spread slowly across the country.
1988 Gary Chiappetta & David McNamara advanced the scoring rules. In a feud regarding players abilities ( Randall Cunningham,Eagles 1985-2001 vs Jim Everett, Rams 1986-1997), Gary and David decided fantasy football scoring should consider the full spectrum of player statistics.
When did it come to the internet?
Fantasy Football came to the internet in 1995.
For years, the popularity of fantasy football grew slowly. That soon changed in 1997 when CBS launched the beta version of the first publicly available free fantasy football website.
The game immediately became wildly popular, within 3 years, all major sports media websites launched competing fantasy football hosting websites.
Fantasy football is now the single most important marketing tool for the NFL. Today it is estimated over 19 million people in public and private leagues online worldwide.
