Ben Carson on refugees “For instance, you know, if there is a rabid dog running around your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog, and you’re probably gonna put your children out of the way,” Carson said. WOW This week, I've heard refugees displaced by war being compared to dogs, poison, savages, pedophiles and rapists. The same rhetoric all goes back to Jim Crow and slavery before that. Demonize people who don't look like you so you don't have to care, that's the strategy. It's pathetic. We're talking about 10000 people only, that's 200 per state. You think a state can't screen 200 people? We already allow millions of immigrants every year, and no one worries about their screening, but Muslims aren't human so we can't risk it. That's pathetic. Bernie Sanders wants to bring in more than 10,000. All three democratic candidates are for a more comprehensive response plan to the crisis. My republican governor is trying to illegally resist federal law and deny refugees. I published my full thoughts on this in my local newspaper. Take a look if you're interested in this issue. dailycollegian.com/2015/11/18/governor-baker-is-wrong-to-reject-syrian-immigrants/

I take it I'm not blocked anymore Juggs. Right? That would be good, because maybe we can learn from each other.
You take 26 units in college? I think I read that.

That post wasn't aimed at you, but I see how that was confusing. I just saw the politics thread as having "new posts" I'm taking 26 class hours, not 26 credits. That's impossible. I have 26 hours of class and 16 hours of paid and unpaid work in journalism or volunteering, and then I have to get my homework done overnight or on the weekends. A degree isn't worth anything in journalism unless you have a laundry of list of bylines, recommendations and video web content BEFORE you get a real job. I managed to actually get a paid gig without a degree basically because I got lucky.

Take a look if you're interested in this issue. dailycollegian.com/2015/11/18/governor-baker-is-wrong-to-reject-syrian-immigrants/Canada has committed to accepting 25,000 refugees by the end of this year, and we are 1/10 the size of USA. However, before we voted in Trudeau, the number was much smaller and our previous PM only wanted to commit to bringing in Christian refugees, because he thought they would assimilate better than Muslims. There is still a huge debate going on up here though and the most vocal on social media seem to think we should close our borders to all refugees. Apparently all of a sudden people care about our elderly and our veterans, and think we should be taking care of them before refugees, despite the fact that those very same people are the ones who bitch about welfare and government intervention every chance they get. craig440, you say it's only 10,000 and it won't solve the problem? No amount of taking in refugees with solve the problem in Syria, but it will solve a major problem for 10,000 people who have been forced out of their homes and are living in dangerous, over crowded refugee camps (some for up to 4 years now). The situation in Syria is a mess. They were devastated by drought and famine 4-5 years ago, are dealing with an oppressive leader (Assad) who has been terrorizing his own countrymen, there are multiple groups of militant rebels fighting against both Assad and ISIS, there is of course ISIS terrorizing the people and trying to establish an Islamic caliphate, then there are other countries like USA, Russia, Iran and many more who back one side or another (sometimes more than one). How are they supposed to solve that right away? Refugees need help now. They are fleeing from horrible violence and famine. Most Syrians have/want nothing to do with the fight. I was travelling around the Middle East 5 years ago and talked to many travellers who had just come from Syria. Apparently it was one of the most friendly places in the Middle East to visit. These refugees are most just normal people like us who got displaced from their homes because of war, famine and extremism. I am getting so fed up with reading anti-Syrian refugee posts all over Facebook.

Interesting stuff going on. Scary also. The world has gone mad. But it has been mad since I was born in 1954. I hear Canada will now limit refugees to "no single males"
Not sure I don't blame them.

People need some serious self-awareness. Very little info is in on the Black Lives Matter protest shooting in Minneapolis but that doesn't stop people on both sides from creating their narrative. Some people are saying the shootings were justified because the protesters were hitting otherwise assaulting the eventual shooters. However, nothing seems to support this. There's a video going around from the POV of the eventual shooters where the protests look pretty angry with the eventual shooters with some of the protesters holding others back. The eventual shooters appear to end up running from one place to another a few times and are followed by the crowd. However, there is no view of the eventual shooters and what they're doing. There's a distinct lack of punching and audio as well. I have yet to find any sources, rightwing or otherwise, that claim the protesters assaulted the eventual shooters except for Reddit comments (I'd love to read some if you know of any). Similarly, I've seen sources claiming the eventual shooters we're threatening the protesters with their guns, but I've only seen in comments that the protesters saw them draw their weapons and thus had reason to assault them. The same people who seem to be able to find reason for use of force in every single situation seem to think that shooting into a crowd of people chasing them away, (ostensibly after they'd separated from the crowd), is easily justifiable, but they cannot find one reason why chasing armed people in ski-masks saying racial slurs, refusing to leave, and generally angering a lot of people in a crowd, might be justifiable. Also, because liberals are frequently stupid too, this being a prime example, journalism like this is simply reckless and frankly copy and pasted from the narrative the person wants to create without having a single clue about the actual event. You could have written this only knowing about the headline of an event. How does this get past an editor? Some BLM protesters are saying that police refused to help the people who were shot and, apparently, said police saw a good portion of the episode and did nothing. If this is true, then the police fucking hate BLM protesters, if it isn't their going to start hating them shortly if they don't already.
