So why not change the name to Washington Indians.
Of course...I think we all are too politically correct, but I sure as hell dont mind that the Notre Dame's name is Irish.

It's the 'Fighting' Irish, which is a noble sounding tribute. ;D It could be the 'Drunken Fight-Picking' Irish which would probably raise more 'ire' (is that where that word comes from lol).

Ya know...the thing about team names is I never even hardly pay attention to them at all. I refer to most teams as to where they are anyway. Never have I sat and watched a game between the Vikings and Redskins and said to myself....I wonder who would win in real life?
I think most people do not think about team mascot names.

We can't add a retract option to a poll once it has been started. If you want that option you can restart a new thread with a new poll. We can transfer posts to that new thread and delete the old thread. My view on such polls is that you should have a retract option unless the poll is hidden when you vote. Just some advice for anyone considering a future poll.
I've never seen the Redskins name as derogatory so it's never been an issue for me. If enough people find it offensive it should be changed. The question is how many people find it offensive. That might sound foolish but there will always be someone who is offended by something. The question is how many people or what % it should take. If the name were to be changed I would have chosen Nationals as the obvious replacement - an option which was considered in the original post. However, if I found Redskins offensive I wouldn't see that as any less offensive. If I objected to being called black i'd likely object to being called African or African warrior.

Here's the thing. As someone who is very informed about the Skins organization and lives in Redskins nation, I absolutely believe the name should be changed. Yes, it is offensive to some. If you don't know whether or not something is offensive, chances are it is.
But there's so much history behind it that there's no way it will be changed in the end. The Skins are one of the top six or seven most storied NFL franchises, along with Green Bay, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Oakland, San Francisco, and Chicago. They have enough of a fanbase and enough of a following, partly due to their location and partly due to their history, that it's not going to happen.

It wont happen for sure. Our country will accept pretty much anything these days. And all compaints by certain groups are upheld by the media and usually change is inevidable. The indians have never had this luxury. How many times do you hear about native american issues in the media.
Im against most american idealogy at this point. Our watered down version of our original values is sorta repulsive IMO. But I have always had a soft spot for native americans, i mean we did steal their country.

Dan I agree with you...But in the gran scheme of things a team name dont mean a hill of beans. We all have a little bit of all nationalities running in our veins regardless of what people think they are.
We all come from the same cloth, same God,same place. We are all brothers and sisters, and to me,in the end...a team name aint gonna amount to nothing.
