4/25/13 -> This is my final edition of this year's draft and I did my best to guess some trades. Maybe I'll be lucky if I get 3 right!
1. Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan - He offers the Chiefs a nastier and better run blocker than they would get out of Joeckel.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU - The Jaguars have no reason to rush the process of becoming a contender so they will take the defensive player with the highest upside.
3. San Diego Chargers: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M - Reggie McKenzie needs to move back and acquire more picks because of the failure of his predecessors. The Chargers can move up for a decent price because of all the teams wanting to move back. A perfect marriage?
4. Philadelphia Eagles: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma - I absolutely loathe the fact I have 3 OTs in the Top 4 but Johnson makes too much sense in a Chip Kelly style offense.
5. Detroit Lions: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon - The Lions must be upset that they failed to land one of the "Big Three" but life isn't too bad with the intriguing Jordan. They have to find people to get after the passer.
6. San Francisco 49ers Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah - The 49ers have 14 picks but it just isn't feasible for them to actually utilize them all in the traditional sense. Their roster is just too strong for that amount of young blood to make the final roster. The 49ers have the picks and are on the cusp to make a move like this to acquire what some consider the best defensive prospect in this draft. The Browns need to make up the 2nd rounder from the Josh Gordan acquisition and fill a bunch of holes anyway.
7. Arizona Cardinals Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB. LSU - Do you really think the Cardinals would take a Guard here when they have the chance to grab someone like Mingo? I don't.
8. Buffalo Bills Matt Barkely, QB, USC - So the first QB is finally taken but it's not Geno Smith. This selection could also be Nassib but that still seems too early so I'll go with the USC product.
9. New York Jets Tavon Austin, WR, WVU - I'm assuming the Jets are going to target two offensive playmakers with their 1st round selections and move on to an offensive minded coach when the Rex Ryan regime ends. Don't even be surprised if their are efforts to crash once more so they have a chance at a top QB in 2014. For now, they will acquire weapons for the future QB.
10. Tennessee Titans Johnathan Cooper, OG, UNC - I loathe the idea of OGs being taken in the top half of a 1st round but considering Mike Munchak is an offensive line type of guy, it just makes too much sense for them to go here.
11. Oakland Raiders Geno Smith. QB, WVU - Might the Raiders actually pull off good deals on draft day? I'm going to give them a little bit of leeway now that the presence of Al Davis is gone. As for Geno Smith going to the Raiders, it's not like Terrelle Pryor is a serious contender for the job and Matt Flynn didn't exactly get a contract that screams "long term starter".
12. Miami Dolphins Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas - Now that we enter the realm of Jeff Ireland, we must throw away logic and common sense. With all of the moves he made in FA, it is quite obvious that he is on the hot seat and he needs to fill holes with need rather than projects. He will take the best S in the draft a little too high.
13. New York Jets Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame - This is too high for Eifert for my own personal tastes but the Jets are going to need that clutch receiving target down the road. I'd love to see what a decent QB could do with Austin and Eifert.
14. Carolina Panthers Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida - This is a REALLY GOOD football player but he just doesn't stand out on tape as a Top 5 selection as he has been touted recently. Still makes for a good combo with Dwan Edwards
15. Minnesota Vikings Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee - I suspect there will be more action to acquire this raw AJ Green esque prospect than we might believe at first glance. Patterson gets all of the attention but Hunter is the true beast on the Volunteers. He would produce well for the Vikings in his first year in an offense that features Peterson and Jennings.
16. St. Louis Rams DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson - In this scenario, I think the Rams would use the first pick on a WR now that two are already off the board. They don't want to risk losing Hopkins, who has been to their facility for numerous visits, to another team.
17. Pittsburgh Steelers Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia - They probably would have went WR easily if Hunter was still available but they will take the 2nd option which is the explosive Jones. He's not the most athletically gifted prospect but the Steelers never seem to care for that anyway.
18. Dallas Cowboys Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri - "Amurica's Team" is constantly being linked to OL with this spot but since they are transitioning to a 4-3, they need personal to reflect that. Richardson has a ton of potential as a 3 tech to collapse the pocket.
19. New York Giants Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama - Thanks to teams grabbing QBs and offensive playmakers, the Giants should be in a good spot to acquire a defensive stud. Milliner fits the Giants mold of CB with his physical style and willingness to enter the fray in run defense. He doesn't need to start right away so he can work on his backpedal technique but he would be the perfect compliment across from Prince in the future.
20. Chicago Bears Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama - The Bears need to find a way to fix that offensive line and this is the appropriate value for a prospect like Warmack. He could open things up for the ground game with his mauling style.
21. Cincinnati Bengals Arthur Brown, ILB, Kansas State - Sure, they resigned Rey Maulagua or whatever his name is but that doesn't mean they won't bring in more competition for the position. It might be best for them to keep Burfict at WOLB and move Mauly to SOLB with Brown in the middle. That's a respectable LB unit.
22. St. Louis Rams Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia - The "troubled but talented" prospect quota for Jeff Fisher is now fulfilled. I'd have him dropping to the 2nd round otherwise.
23. New Orleans Saints Xavier Rhodes, CB, FSU - The Saints have to be thrilled to land Rhodes at this point in the 1st round and to recover some picks from the Bounty Scandal too. Well, they have to be excited to land any defensive prospect, you know?
24. Atlanta Falcons D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston - Assuming the trade up rumors are true, the Falcons will end up trying to put themselves in position to acquire either a stud DE or CB. With Hayden still available, they have to be excited.
25. Minnesota Vikings Cornellius Carradine, DE, FSU - This is a good spot for the inexperienced but ultra talented Tank. Damn shame about the ACL or he would have been a Top 10 pick.
26. Green Bay Packers D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama - There have been rumors of the Packers looking to land a RB with the 1st in order to improve their ground attack but they could easily do that with the massive Fluker as well. Besides, I think he will be better protected in this system which features more quick releases from the QB.
27. Houston Texans Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee - The Texans need a playmaker across from Johnson at the WR position and only Patterson offers such unique talents at this point. I seriously question if this guy can grasp an NFL playbook but we will see.
28. Denver Broncos Bjoern Werner, DE, FSU - This is a really good replacement for Elvis Dumervil in Denver. He should continue to see good production in the NFL with Von Miller across from him.
29. Philadelphia Eagles E.J. Manuel, QB, FSU - The Patriots need to stockpile picks for the future once more and they can trade back with the Eagles to do so. There has been a decent amount of interest in Manuel as a read option threat and Chip Kelly could pull the trigger.
30. Indianapolis Colts Datone Jones, DE, UCLA - The Colts could really use a more disruptive force on the LoS and Jones would fit what Chuck Pagano wants.
31. Cleveland Browns Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M - He was mocked to the Browns a few times in the past but in the top 10 instead. Probably needs to hit an NFL conditioning program for a year before he can emerge but he has potential.
32. Baltimore Ravens Johnathan Banks, CB, Mississippi State - The Ravens lost a bunch of talent in FA this offseason and need to find players who can logically fill these holes. Banks might not pan out on the corner of a defense but even then, he would make an excellent FS with his natural ball skills.
