Cundiff is a major improvement from Akers, except in clutch time
but Akers were missing them even in normal situations, in clutch time he could be worse

Cundiff has been released by two teams already. I just don't see him as a big improvement, but then again we are talking about the coach who benched Alex Smith for Kaepernick. So I guess I am not surprised.

Seems like every kick counts with kickers. I rem that Philly/Green Bay game. I just knew he was gone after that.

The sad thing about Akers in that 2010 playoff game was likely he wasn't thinking about the kicks, as I remember his daughter was diagnosed with a rare disease a few weeks before the game and likely wasn't thinking about the kicks and was thinking about her, sad really, I think that had a HUGE impact on that game.

The 38-year-old Akers also revealed Thursday — when newly signed kicker Billy Cundiff practiced alongside him in what has become a competition — that he underwent double hernia surgery last February following his All-Pro season. Wow, didn't even know this, here is the link: www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2013/01/03/49ers-david-akers-death-threats-twitter/1808137/Damn 49er fans, and here I thought it was the raider fans that killed people, but I guess after that SF giant fan got beat up everyone in SF has turned to crime.

(Rotoworld)David Akers (pelvis) revealed Thursday that he underwent surgery last February for a double sports hernia.
Analysis: Complications from that surgery have been behind his struggles of late. Akers was shaky on the first day of his kicking competition while Billy Cundiff showed a stronger and more accurate leg. "The telling sign to me is the fact he's missing them wide left, which means he's not getting his hips through the ball," ex-49ers kicker Joe Nedney said of Akers. "He's not swinging confidently through the ball." It's premature to predict a winner here, but Cundiff appears to have the edge.
