I have been really busy lately, thus the reason this thread has not been very active. Anyways some up to date Patriots news:
Pats signed CB E.J. Biggers yesterday to a one year veteran minimum deal. Biggers should compete in training camp for CB depth.
Nate Washington also received the veteran minimum. The money says Washington is not guaranteed a roster spot, but I would be pretty surprised if he doesn't end up on the active 53. I think the receiving core will feature Edelman, Amendola, Hogan, Martin, Washington, and some rookie. I would be surprised if Dobson is on the roster at this point, but things could change if he can actually go through an entire offseason injury free.
Anthony Gulizia of the Washington times says that Terrance Knighton has offers from New England and Washington but is leaning towards a deal with the Patriots. Pats have tried to sign Knighton in previous offseasons, but have not been able to do so. Knighton would be part of a 4 man rotation with Brown, Easley, and Branch. Basically it would be the same rotation as last year except swap out Hicks for Knighton. Knighton and Hicks are different players, but overall I think Knighton would be an upgrade over Hicks, just older.
Here is the updated Patriots free agent signings and some of my thoughts on the additions:
Ramon Humber: A needed special teams LB, who hopefully won't have to play defense.
Frank Kearse: Not a guaranteed roster spot, but could fight for depth positions on the dline.
Chris Hogan: Going to be an excellent fit in this offense. Should take on the role LaFell had last season and should be a solid upgrade over LaFell.
Resigned Nate Ebner: Ebner has been one of the best special teamers in the league.
Dealt Chandler Jones to Arizona for a 2nd round pick and Jonathan Cooper: There was no chance Jones was going to be resigned after this season, so in that scenario we would get one year out of Jones and then net a 3rd round comp pick in 2018. This trade gets us a guard that was in the top 3 out of all players on the Patriots draft board in 2013 and a 2nd round pick in this years draft. It was a necessary trade that likely won't make much of an impact in 2016.
Dealt 4th round pick for Martellous Bennett and a 6th round pick: This is a huge trade for the Pats. Bennett gives us the ability to run a package we have not been able to succesfully run since Hernandez. He is one of the top 5 TE's in the league and excells as both a pass catcher and blocker. This really changes the offense.
Donald Brown: The 300,000 dollar signing bonus tells me that they really like his chances to be on this team, but it isn't a complete guarantee. What I like about Brown is that he is an excellent pass protector, good pass catcher, and very useful special teamer. He should have a roster spot in 2016.
Chris Long: Long is an excellent fit, should easily replace Chandler Jones production and is a more consistent pass rusher than Jones, also better against the run. Health has been an issue for Long the past two years and that is the only concern, but the Pats got him for virtually nothing compared to what these pass rushers are getting.
Shea McClellin: McClellin should be an excellent fit in this defense. What I really like about him is that he can play all 3 LB positions, and be an edge rusher in either 4-3 or 3-4 schemes. He was misutilized in Chicago and should get good chances to produce in New England.
Nate Washington.
Here is my current Patriots draft predictions:
Second round: 60th overall selection: CB, WR or RB
Second round: 61st overall selection (from Arizona Cardinals): CB, WR, or RB
Third round: 91st overall selection: trade down, acquire a 4th or 5th rounder in this draft and next years draft, use that pick on a OT.
Third round: 96th overall selection (compensatory): CB, WR, or RB
BPA in the following rounds:
Sixth round: 196th overall selection (from Houston Texans)
Sixth round: 204th overall selection (reacquired from Chicago Bears)
Sixth round: 208th overall selection (compensatory)
Sixth round: 214th overall selection (compensatory)
Sixth round: 221st overall selection (compensatory)
Seventh round: 243rd overall selection (from Houston)
Seventh round: 250th overall selection
