Is that not fucking awesome?? It seems awesome but it's not practical. Why place super expensive solar panels on the ground, beneath heavy vehicles that will wreck them, when you could put them on roofs or in large open areas? And what about areas shaded by trees or buildings? It could be cool to do open parking lots or recreational areas, where the LED features could really be useful, but otherwise I think it's a waste of money.

I am going to assume if they are planned to be used as roads that they would be more than strong enough to not be wrecked by vehicles. Putting them on roofs and large open areas is a good idea too. You do realize that even in shade solar panels still intake sunlight correct? Even in shade there is light or else you wouldn't be able to see. It definitely takes in more power from direct light, but even in shade or on cloudy days solar panels still charge.. I also assume this would be taken into consideration as shade does change things. A waste of money that would end up saving money and possibly the environment in the long run, if these things do everything they say they can? I am not completely sold on these things by any means, I have a lot doubt that they are truly plausible. But if these things are what they say they are and do what they say they do than I don't see this as a waste. There may be better ways to implement them, but this seems like a solid place to start to me..

I kind of agree with saska. And Jin you are assuming ALL streets would be made of this. That is impossible. They could be put in certain places, but the wear and tear of the cars running over it makes no sense to me. Solar works fantastic here in So Cal. But we don't need to put it in the street. It would make a whole new repair department. We would get Solar Pot Holes.

The video is I think this is just a cool piece of technology and "IF" it works the way the video says it does, why wouldn't a person want this. Remember these aren't just your run of the mill solar panels.. these would be built specifically to deal with the wear and tear of vehicles. As I said I don't know if this is plausible.. and its not like its going to happen right away, and even if it does start happening it will be in small increments and it will go through tons of testing and trial periods before it would take. IF these work the way the video says, it would be amazing for it to happen. But it likely won't happen in our life time at least not on a grand scale.

They do run a tractor over them in one of the videos, and additionally they talked about putting them on plain runways, so I imagine they must be able to handle a shit ton of weight. I am sure there are problems with it, but I do not see any reason why it would be impossible to do this at any point in the future.

This kind of stuff is the future. I hope. Our energy stuff now is just old and wrong. We can do so much better.

There may be better ways to implement them, but this seems like a solid place to start to me.. Yes. they will be made durable enough to handle traffic, but they will still wear over time and the cost of building them to be so durable would be far more expensive than the cost of building ones that don't need to withstand the weight of thousands of vehicles daily. And sure, solar panels can still bring in a bit of light, but is it worth it to line an entire street with pavement if it is in a fully covered forest, a city street with massive buildings on either side or in an underground tunnel? The cost of installing and maintaining that would not likely make up for the amount of energy those sections produce. Also, roads don't just get damaged from vehicles, they also get damaged from weather and shifting of the earth. In Regina we have very unsettled ground beneath our roads. Pair that with the freezing and thawing of the groundwater each year and it results in warped pavement and massive potholes all the time. As I said before, I like the idea of this. It is really cool and there are some amazing features that I think would be fantastic to see on our roads, but I don't think that it is practical at all to do this. We have tons of space on our rooftops, where we can cover them with solar panels that only need to withstand weather; nothing drives on them and the base beneath them is far more stable than the shifting ground. Yes, we lose some of the convenience of traffic safety that the Solar FREAKIN' Roadways claim to provide, but some luxuries are simply not feasible.

Harnessing the tides and waves have always been a thought in my head. Since I was a big wave surfer I know the energy. Solar is awesome and works. Many have it here in So Cal. I haven't read all this thread yet. But if I was young and looking for a career, I would look to natural energy for sure. It's going to be the future. I hope. Oregon State is one of the leading researchers of this tech. They're testing a lot on the coast already.

I googled it. there was a lot of articles. I didn't even notice the fox news thing. Google it yourself. Its a fact that everyone knows. It was big news a while back. I'm surprised it is not known more widely here. Don't let the fact that article was from Fox make you close your eyes to such a simply easily found fact.
