Hello everyone and welcome to my 2nd year annual NFL picks tournament challenge. Some of you participated in this game last year. Others, this might be your first time. Either way, the rules are very simply. Here is the rundown:
*PLEASE READ ALL THE RULES. Even if you are new or you have played this last year, you must read the all of the rules before posting. I made a lot of changes this year, so please read everything.
*BE ALERT FOR ANY CHANGES ON THE RULES. I will try not to make many changes, but if I do I will post it down on my latest post on this thread, so stay alert if anything happens on here.
*IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ANYBODY. Last year we had around 30 active people a week. But there are so many people active on the forums that didn’t join last year that I think should have. I know more people would mean more work for some of the volunteers, but this is a really fun game to try that isn’t very hard to do. So if you’re someone who has a lot of posts already that hasn’t played this game, and you’re reading this right now, I encourage you to try it out. My goal is to get at least 50 or 60 people this year instead. More people mean’s it becomes more popular for other people who might want to join. So read the rules first and if you like what you see, go ahead and join.
ENTRIES END ON SEPT 5TH. (If you still want to join after this date, read the rules first then ask)
HOW TO PLAY:
1. The objective of the game is simple. Pick who you think is going to win each week. Every game you pick right, you will score one point for it. Get a game wrong though, and you lose one point. Your final score at the end of the season will decide the winner. Playoff games are scored different, which I will explain later as you continue to read.
2. When making your selection, it needs to be placed on time before each game starts. Late picks will not be scored, due to the fact that the game you picked has already started. Every late pick will be an automatic 1 point deduction. If you are late with a bunch of games, then you will just get an automatic 3 point deduction for the week. For example, if you were late posting your picks, but only missed the Thursday night game for the week and got all of your Sunday picks in, you would only lose 1 point. If you don’t get all of your Sunday games in time, you just get the 3 point deduction for the week. Oh, and DOUBLE CHECK your picks always. A lot of people seem to forget a pick at times here and there. I will not remind you if you forgot a pick. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR PICKS.
3. If you manage to lose more games, than picking actual games, then you will have negative points. You can go below 0, so don’t think that missing a lot of games will not mean you are safe in points. It can be bad for those who come in late to play, because if you miss the first 4 weeks, you already lost 3 points for each week you missed, thus starting out at -12. So make sure you try not to miss any games.
4. When making your picks, there’s a certain outlook I want it to be. You must do it something like this
Bengalmania2
NO @ GB – GB W
PIT @ BAL – BAL W
CIN @ CLE – CLE W
IND @ HOU – HOU W
BUF @ KC – KC W
DET @ TB – TB W
PHI @ STL – PHI W
ATL @ CHI – ATL W
TEN @ JAC – JAC W
NYG @ WAS – NYG W
SEA @ SF – SF W
MIN @ SD – SD W
CAR @ ARI – ARI W
DAL @ NYJ – DAL W
NE @ MIA – NE W
OAK @ DEN – DEN W
If you noticed, you must type each game like so, and put the winner on the end of each line. Also when entering in your picks, you must also remember to type your username at the top of your picks for the week, because we copy and paste the picks, so that way when we save them, we know who is who. There are other ways you can put your picks in and here are some more examples.
NO @ GB = GB W
NO vs GB = GB W
Saints at Packers = Packers W
Do you see the pattern? Basically all you have to do is say who is playing who, and then put the winner on the right end of each row.
DO NOT DO THIS:
Bengalmania2
Packers over Saints
Ravens over Steelers
Browns over Bengals
etc…
OR
Bengalmania2
Winners:
Packers
Ravens
Browns
etc.
If you do either one of those things, your picks will not be scored. I had several people do that last year and they wouldn’t stop, and therefore I sometimes messed up while adding up the scores. So please, do not do that
5. If you do not put your name above your picks, you will lose one point automatically. However, not everyone is perfect, so if you forget one time, I will let it off with a warning. Second time, you will get another warning about it and get a lecture by me or one of the staff members on here. Do it a 3rd time, and you will start losing points from here on out. Sorry, but we need people to get in the grove of putting there name at the top of there picks. Its like forgetting to put your name on your homework when you were at school. Teachers don't like it. If you forget to do it in preseason too much, it will not affect your score
6. If you’re a newcomer and you want to play, you must ask me or other personnel I decide to put in charge to help me with this game. I have had several people who came out of the blue and posted their picks without asking and they never show up again after that. If you don’t ask me first or someone else and you don’t respond back to our answer, you will not be allowed to particpate.
7. This is a game for people that are going to show online at least once a week. If you’re someone that knows that you cannot show up every week, I do not want you participating. Sorry, but I can’t have people on here who don’t show up every week and then disappear. It not only gives me more wasted work to do, but then other people also try to do it. If you’re a slacker, please don’t participate. Sorry.
8.Last year when I did this the first time, it wasn’t easy. I did most of the work, but I did have a little bit of help along the way from others. That is why this year I am asking for more help than ever from people. After you are done reading the rules, there will be a list of voluntary jobs open for anybody that wants them. There are some requirements to some of them, so make sure you read the requirements first before asking to volunteer for a job. All help is appreciated.
9. Everyone is allowed to participate in this game. It doesn’t matter who you are, if I’ve held grudges against you or anybody else or you have held grudges against me or anybody else, I will not take away your rights to participate in this game. However, if you try to push your luck with me or anybody else continually with others on here during the tourney, I will not hesitate to kick you out. I admit that once or twice, I went overload on one or two people on the forums before (and I apologize for that, and will not do it again) but bullying anybody else will not be tolerated on here. It’s a game and I want everyone to have fun. But don’t put others down on here if they continue to do bad. If you do so after that certain person has asked you to stop, you will be kicked out. If you want to rejoin, I will let it off with a warning. But do it again, and you are done for the year.
10. You are free to change your picks at any given time, just as long as that game you want to change hasn’t started yet. While changing picks, tell me though what picks you want to change and they will be changed. DO NOT REPOST YOUR ENTIRE LIST TWICE AND NOT POINT OUT WHAT GAMES YOU WANT CHANGE IN THE PROCESS. Several times last year, I had people who posted their list once, and then a couple of days reposted there entire list again. Problem is, the people that reposted there list don’t tell me what they changed. Then that means I have to look at your old AND new list to find out what you wanted change because you were too lazy to tell me what you wanted changed. TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO BE CHANGED OR IT WILL NOT BE CHANGED.
11. While picks are posted, another person will keep track of them all while doing so. As they do that, I will also be saving the picks on a Microsoft document in the process, in case any tampering is done to the picks.
12. A chart will be kept track each week, so that you can see how many of us picked which team each week. For example, if 30 people had their picks in this week and 20 people picked one team to win, and the other 10 people picked the other team, then it will show what the majority of people picked.
13. Tiebreakers will be decided by preseason and by certain other rules too. The first tiebreaker will be your attendance. If you had late picks or forgot to post picks for one week, while someone else has posted picks for the entire year so far, and you both have the same score, the person who hasn’t had any late picks will win the tiebreaker. If 2 people happen to be tied and they also are tied, the person who had more picks they forgot to post loses the tiebreaker. The second tiebreaker will be decided by whoever has the better preseason score. See more on preseason for more answers. The final tiebreakers will be if you have an avatar or not. An avatar is your profile picture. And after that, it’s the date of when you made your first post on the forums.
14. If you know you are not going to be able to post your picks for one week, you must do it ahead of time instead. I will not remind anyone if you forgot your picks for the week. You must remember it yourself. If you need a reminder though, please speak with me about it.
15. If at any time you want to quit the game, notify only me on this thread or my profile. Don’t ask another member to take you out of the game, let me know if you want to quit and nobody else. I will ask you once or twice if you’re really sure on doing this first. If so, then I will pull you out for the rest of the year if that’s what you want. If you know you’re going to stop playing for the year, DO NOT DISAPPEAR AND DON’T BOTHER TO TELL ME. I’ve seen this so many times last year that when people quit, 90 percent of the time, they don’t tell me or anyone. They just leave. DON’T BE THAT PERSON. If you miss more than 3 weeks in a row, I will most likely pull you off the rankings for the rest of the year. And if you want back in, you will be allowed back in with a warning. Do it again though, and your done for the year.
16. At the moment still, nfl.c0m has a problem where messages cannot be sent to each other now. So if you have any questions, you must post them in this thread, and this thread only
17. nfl.c0m has been undergoing a change where they transfer user comments now to facebook comments. It has been used now in the gamecenters and articles. It hasn’t happened to the forums yet, but could likely happen in the future. If this happens, our group will be going to a new location instead. The link on where we could be moving is right underneath this message. Sign up for there if your part of this game, in case we end up moving to that location
nflfanforums.proboards.com/index.cgiPRESEASON AND PLAYOFFS
1. Preseason will also be used in this game. You will have the opportunity to earn a tiebreaking chance during preseason. Preseason will not count to your main score, but it will be the preliminary round to start out and decide the tiebreakers. Some of you that post picks in other games every week, already know that the tiebreaker rules for that are decided in the Monday night football game by picking the total score of that game for the night. That’s not how we operate though, since it’s a full year thing, and not week by week decided. By using preseason, it will be one of your main tiebreakers if you’re neck and neck with another person. Preseason points will operate the same as the regular season.
2. Preseason is not a requirement during this game. If you don’t do it though, you will be at a clear disadvantage though, since you will not earn a tiebreaker. Every preseason week you miss will count as a 5 point deduction on your preseason score. Again, preseason score is not the same as your regular season score. But not participating doesn’t mean you are finished. Our champion last year (bam1979) didn’t participate at all in preseason and was a last minute entry in this game and yet he was the last one standing when it was all said and done. So don’t throw in the towel if you forgot about preseason, because you still have a chance to win.
3. Playoff rules are completely different from the regular season. Usually when playoffs start, you only have around 11 more chances to get some more points, which isn’t a lot. So therefore, you get to decide how many points you want put on the line for each playoff game. However, you have to stay in your budget. For example, let’s say I combined all of the points I got in the regular season and came up with 80 points. There are 4 playoff games for the week. I can choose to go with 50 points maybe for one of the games, and then maybe 5 points for the rest of them.
Example
Bengalmania2
CIN @ HOU – CIN W (5 points)
DET @ NO – NO W (50 points)
ATL @ NYG – NYG W (5 points)
PIT @ DEN – PIT W (1 point)
If you noticed, I have decided to put 61 points on the line in the process. If you get that game right, you get that many points. Get a game wrong, and you lose as many points you decided to put on the line. You have to say in the budget though. I put have a total of 80 points and I am not allowed to do beyond that. If you do so, your picks for the week will not be scored. I had one person who had like 60 points total and he decided to go with 50 points on each game. He was not allowed to do that, because he went beyond his budget. It must stay in the budget, or it will not count. NO EXCEPTIONS.
4. If you happen to have negative points by the start of playoffs, you do not get a budget like everyone else. You may only go with 1 point every game until you no longer have negative points.
INFORMATION NEWS AND VOULUNTARY STUFF
1. I changed several of the rules last year a lot, but this year, I had this all planned out in May, so there shouldn’t be many stuff to be changed. If you have questions about anything, don’t hesitate to ask me. Just ask me on this thread, or ask me on my profile instead. My profile is locked for friends only though, so if need a question, you will have to friend request me first
2. At end of each week, I will update the points and give announcements every week, so be sure to keep up. Most likely, I will try to do it every Tuesday morning, so keep in check. I give weekly awards too for people and will tell you updated standings.
3. I mentioned this last year, but in the future I kind of want this cycle of the game to continue on nfl.c0m for years. I will be the one in charge of this game this year though, but in the future, if someone wants to be the boss for a year, you can do so. But of course, there will be several requirements in order to do so, before I pass off the torch for a year. It’s not easy to do, but I’m willing to let anyone do it. If you’re interested in doing this in the future, ask me on this thread. Preliminary requirement to ask is you must have at least 1000 posts already on the forums.
4. I’m all in for suggestions on here, so feel free to offer any way to make the game more enjoyable on here. I’m not always going to say YES, but ask anyway.
5. As some of you already know, last year while being the one in charge of this game, it was easy at all. I did most of it, checking off people who had their picks in, totaling who picked who, totaling the scores, and establishing the rules. Thankfully, pantherfan2728 last year kept track of a list of picks that people posted and had them all on one page, and also kept track of the old picks in the process. Another guy gng33 also double checked the scores I totaled up to make sure I didn’t make a mistake, which helped me a lot and did it the whole regular season. However, he disappeared in the middle of the playoffs, and that was a problem for me. That is why I am going to get more people this year to help me out. Here are the job lists. But first the requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE-I know on some of the requirements, you will require 500 posts first. But since there is a chance that this whole thread could get moved elsewhere, everyone could end up starting fresh on posts. If you want a job, I will give you a job if you think you can handle it
1. You must be someone who’s going to show up on here daily. If you don’t think you can be on here every week, you are not allowed to volunteer for one of these jobs. I need people that are going to be here a lot, otherwise there’s no point in giving you a job
2. You need to be someone who’s going to work well with others. I will let everyone participate in this game even if your reputation isn’t the best. But if you get in a lot of arguments with other people, you’re not allowed to do this. Arguments are not the same as debates by the way. If I think you start too many fights with people on the forums or if you complain too much to people, you cannot have a job.
3. You need to have at least 500 posts on the forums. I want people who will show up on here daily, but to prove that, your post count would speak louder than words. Sorry if you’re new and you want a job or you have been on the forums forever, but never had 500 posts, you still won’t be allowed to have a job. (READ THE NOTE FIRST)
JOBS:
Each job will have a description next to each one. Note. You can do more than one job if you really want. If there are too many people that want a certain job, I will hand pick who I want
Chairman of the Board and Editor:Bengalmania2
(The big guy in charge of it all. Needs to organize everything and makes sure everything is running smoothly.)
Secretary:
(The 2nd person in charge in case the chairman is in absence. Basically it’s his assistant. He will do some of the same stuff the chairman will do, but not all of it. The chairman will handpick who he wants here.)
Recorder: pantherfan2728, diehard2200
(The person who keeps track of all of the current picks each week for everyone to see, and keeps an archive of the old picks as well. 1 or 2 assistances will be added too.)
Checker: bengalmania2, hebertespinosa
(The person who has to total all of the points every week and add them together with other previous weeks too. The chairman did this last year as well, but will require more people for this one. Will need 2 or 3 more assistance’s along with the main one in charge. The chairman might do it too, but if the chairman cannot get the points in fast enough, the other people also totaling the points will do it instead)
Spokesperson:
(The person who must remind people when the deadline is for weekly picks. Usually that means just posting a message of when the deadline for picks is for each week. 1 or 2 assistances will be added)
For more information on each job, ask me on this thread. And for anybody interested in being the future Chairman of the board for one year, ask me on here as well, and I will develop a waiting list.
PREVIOUS CHAMPIONS HISTORY
Below is a new category of the previous winners in the past of this game. Though this game is still fairly new, maybe 10 years down the road, it will be more of an importance. So when that time comes, we will be able to reflect on the history and the pioneers who started this game and the winners in the past.
REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS:
2011: Kjcrowe23
SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS:
2011: Bam1979
WEEKLY AWARDS
Each week I will be giving an award to the person who scores the best each week. It will be known as the player of the week award (or in this case, the person who gets the most wins during one week). It’s pretty simple, get the best score during a week and you win the award. In no way whatsoever though, it will have nothing to do with your original score for the year. But giving out weekly awards are stuff to give others motivation. At some points last year, more than one person would have the same score each week, but I still only gave the award to one person still. That will change this year, so if two or more people have the same score for the week, both or all of those people will get the award for the week.

THE PERFECT CLUB
One more new thing I am adding is the “perfect club”. Nobody could do this last year, but if ANYONE can go a full week with getting all of their picks right for any week this year, you will be put in the perfect club. And if you can get yourself in the perfect club, it will be put on the archive history for the future pick’em challenge threads, and so others can see what you managed to accomplish. So do you think you can go a perfect week?
FINAL WORDS
The last part now is the entry list. Whoever wants to join will be on the list, and that way you can see who else is joining. Simple as that
