What was his method on drafting players? I know you took two rookies early in the latest drafts, but other than that does he typically target high round linemen, or develop the low round guys? Also what's his track record for undrafted players?
I can't say exactly, but we were really confident in what we wanted in each position. We wanted mauling tackles, Roos and Stewart, two Munchak era picks. Then in 2012, we wanted a mauling, run blocking guard so we took Warmack. At center we need a swing guy and a guy who could go to the second level, so we took Schwenke. Munchak was a good talent evaluator and he knew what he wanted in a team. It didn't always work out, but most of his draft picks worked phenomenally well.
All Munchak draft picks:
2011
Round 1: QB Jake Locker, B
Round 2: OLB Akeem Ayers, A-
Round 3: DT Jurrell Casey, A+
Round 4: Colin McCarthy, B
Round 5: Karl Klug, B
Round 6: Byron Stingly, C-
Round 7: Zach Clayton, F
2012:
Round 1: WR Kendall Wright, A
Round 2: OLB Zach Brown, A
Round 3: DT Mike Martin, B+
Round 4: CB Coty Sensabaugh, B-
Round 5: TE Taylor Thompson, C-
Round 6: SS Markelle Martin, F
Round 7: DE Scott Soloman, D
2013:
Round 1: OG Chance Warmack, A
Round 2: WR Justin Hunter, B+
Round 3: CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson, B
Round 3: OLB Zaviar Gooden, Inc, but he looks good so far
Round 4: C Brian Schwenke, A
Round 5: DE Lavar Edwards, C
Round 6: Khalid Wooten, D
Round 7: Daimion Stafford, C-
The team of Ruston Webster and Mike Munchak generally drafted exceptionally well and it was typically Jeff Fisher era hangovers and injuries that caused this group not to make the playoffs. 2011, Munchaks first draft, was particuarly impressive. He largely ignored the Titans needs in every round and just went with his gut. 2011 was his best class it seems and I'm quite happy with how he was building the team in the long run. He's a great OL coach and if he ever gets promoted to OC or HC for the Steelers, I think he'd do a fine job.
