How 'bout those Giants? It is not hard to remember the Giants roller coaster ride in 2011. They started the season slow, where in the 2nd quarter in their week 2 game @ STL, it appeared the Giants were heading to a 0-2 record. They picked things up in Philly, where a man by the name of Victor Cruz came "Out of the Blue" and gave them hope with the slot man, Domenik Hixon, done for the year. The Giants rolled strong into their bye week, being 5-2.
With a win over MIA in week 8, they headed to NE for a clash against Brady. One of the games of the year (IMO), the game went down to the last minute, where Brady seemed to close the deal. Eli had other plans, drove down the field, and gave Ballard a perfect ball in the endzone, where it was just too late for Brady to muster something up. Many thought the Giants were destined for the 2012 NFC East crown.
Well, things do not turn out as expected. The Giants then lost 4 in a row, in which they lost to a Vick-less Eagles and suffered a clobbering from the Saints (easily their worst loss of the year). Even though their game against GB went in the loss column, it gave the Giants unlimited confidence. And when all seemed lost at Dallas where "America's Team" set themselves up to practically take the division crown, the Giants showed perseverance. Eli led the Giants offense to 2 quick scores in the 4th quarter, giving them a 3 point lead with not much time left. Romo did his job, getting DAL in FG range and setting up Dan Bailey, a pleasant surprise for the "Boys, to bring the game to OT. However, the Giants did not overtime, they needed to do something. Well, after a timeout by TC (Tom Coughlin), Bailey kicked his field goal, only to be batted in the air by DE-sensation Jason Pierre-Paui, netting the GMen a win, and helping them in their fight for the crown. This win also helped rival PHI, as they now had a chance to get the division crown after a terrible first half performance of football in 2011.
After a loss to the Skins (and getting swept by them for the year), the Giants were once again looking for answers, and how to preserve their 2011 season. Then the slogan "All in", said by TC, sunk into every Giants player, and it gave them confidence that was not shown during the season. They NEEDED to win, and that is what they did against the New York Jets and Rex Ryan.
Week 17. Primetime. Last game of the season. NYG v DAL. Winner takes all. Eli v Romo. DAL put up a fight towards the end, but a late game sack by veteran Justin Tuck sealed the game, giving the NYG the NFC East crown.
The Giants we saw in the first 14 games of the season were not the same we saw in the last 6. The Giants hosted Atlanta and held them to only 2 points in a 24-2 victory. Then the big one. Into GB to play Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. The Giants were hot, however (much like GB was in 2010 during their run). The Giants then had to go into SF and play a ROUGH game. Eli took a huge beating, arguably the biggest one of his career, but he stood strong, not forcing a turnover against the top ranked defense led by Patrick Willis.
NYG/NE pt.2 - the second time during the season. The second SB meeting between the teams in half a decade. A hard fought game on both sides. As BB said, it is a Nicks and Cruz game. Indeed it was. But it finished being a Manning(ham) game, as the Giants strolled on to win their 4th SB and with Eli Manning winning his second SB MVP award.
Nothing like a happy ending.
