i think free agency starts tonight but im not 100 sure. but with that, that means the offseason will began soon
im curious to know what you think about your teams offseason work this year
heres mine
THE CINCINNATI REDS
after having a disappointing season last year, the reds managed to bounce back this year and get back to the postseason. unforuately when the reds won there first 2 games on the road against the giants, they choked in all 3 home games against to the eventual world series champs
the reds being very healthy this season is a big reason for there success. the reds started with there 5 set rotation with johnny cueto, mat latos, bronson arroyo, homer bailey, and mike leake from the start all the way to the end. NOBODY got injured all year and the only time they called up another starting pitcher was when they had a double header game due to a postponed game earlier this year
the reds moved aroldis chapman who was originally gonna be a starter at the start of the season to the bullpen due to the massive injuries with guys like bill bray, nick masset, and ryan madson. sean marshall had to play as the closer since madson was done for the season but he struggled. they moved chapman to closer and the rest was history. he hit a wall when he started playing the american league, but other than that, he was lights out all season
even when joey votto went out for 1 and a half months of the season, the reds still managed to go 32-16 in that span without him
MVP: SP johnny cueto. a guy that was rightfully robbed and should of been in the all star game was a cy young canadiate all the way to the end. hes been the ace the reds have been looking for years now. it was a shame he got hurt in the 1st game of the playoffs because it cost the team there chance to advance
LVP: CF drew stubbs. has all the speed in the world and is excellent when it comes to stealing bases. theres one problem though. he cant hit. the former top 10 pick the reds used in the 2006 draft hasnt lived up to standards. while it doesnt look like he will be traded, i doubt he will be starting anymore. you can bet he wont last very long as a red though
Key Free agents
3B scott rolen
RP johnathan broxton
IF miguel cairo
C dioner navarro
OF ryan ludwick
RP ryan madson
the most important free agents are ludwick and broxton. ludwick signed with the reds last year on a 1 year deal. he struggled with the pirates down the stretch in 2011 thus not being resigned. he was a big playmaker for the reds this year though. broxton had some problems at time for the reds this year, but was very good for the royals this year before being traded to the reds. he needs to be brought back as well
i dont expect rolen to be resigned. he struggled this year, and todd fraizer has emerged as the future 3B. cairo is depth at best and hes lost his steam . navarro was signed to be a minor league player at first but came in for devin mesaraco because mesaraco struggled too much this year. so bring navarro back another year might not hurt. madson didnt play at all this year and wont be ready for opening season and wont likely be a closer to start the season, but might be brought back
THE PLAN
two words: leadoff hitter. the reds average batting average at the leadoff spot was the worst in the league. drew stubbs and zack cozart couldnt get it done. the reds tried to get shane victorino in a trade this year but it didnt happen. now hes a free agent and the reds right now seem like a good landing spot for him.
the reds also need to decide if chapman is gonna be a starter this year or will he stay at closer. mike leake was the weaklink in the rotation and putting him in the minors wouldnt hurt. problem is, if you move chapman out of the bullpen, whos gonna be the closer?
