I realize the TE position has moved away from the extra-body-to-run-block to the extra-hands-to-pass-catch in recent years, but I hardly expected TEs to usurp their WR corps in so many offenses this season.
What is going on here? Is this a trend that is going to continue, or just an early-season stats anomaly?
My Question--- If I have backup RBs and #3WRs on my FF bench, but I have V Davis, T Gonzelez, Gronk or Graham AND (one of these TEs listed below with a GOOD MATCHUP)—can I consider starting both?
After three games, each of these TEs are the #1WR for their teams. In some cases, the reasons seem more obvious (injuries) then in others--
-V Davis over M Crabtree and R Moss (SF)
-T Gonzelez over J. Jones and R White (ATL)
-B Celek over D-Jax and Macclin (PHI)
-Gronk over B Lloyd and W Welker (NE)
As for TEs as #2WRs, M Bennett is just behind V Cruz and over H Nicks (NYG). Nicks missed last week’s game and looks to miss this week as well. So, the reasons for Bennett’s #2 standing right now is obvious. But-- what explains this slew of other TEs who are the statistical #2WRs for their teams?
-H Miller just behind M Wallace but over A Brown (PIT)
-J Graham just behind L Moore but over M Colston (NO)
-D Pitta just behind T Smith but over A. Bolden (BAL)
Ok—I also know some teams don’t have a slew of capable WRs. But how about these TEs who are statistically nearly-tied with their team’s #1WRs?
-K Rudolph just behind P Harvin (MN)
-J Cook just behind N Washington (TEN)
-S Chandler just behind S Johnson (BUF)
-O Daniels just behind A Johnson (HOU)
-M Floyd then D Rosario (SD) – (ok this is a fluke--it should be Gates)
