The NFL playoffs started in earnest this past weekend. 12 teams all racing for postseason glory in Houston on Feb 5th in SB LI.
Here are a few thoughts.
Aaron shows why: Folks with all due respect to Tom Brady, yesterday you witnessed the best QB in the NFL and maybe all-time. The Giants dominated the game defensively. They sacked and harassed the Green Bay offense. Yet they were only up 6-0 because of dropped TD passes by Sheppard and Odell. The Packers got the lead on a brilliant scramble and pass to Davante Adams by Rodgers and took a 14-6 halftime lead on a hail mary. Aaron has become the master of the hail mary. 2015 in Detroit on a Thursday night after Thanksgiving to win the game.2016 against Arizona in the playoffs to force OT and last night to take a 14-6 lead to put a knife in the collective hearts of the New York Giants. This would have been the final nail in the Giant coffin. Yet the Giants closed the game to 14-13 on a TD pass from Eli to King. The Giants got field position from Mike McCarthy inexplicably going for a 4th and 1 on their own 40 and getting stuffed by the Giant D.It looked as if McCarthy's decision would doom the Packers. Yet Aaron went down the field in four plays 63 yards to take a 21-13 lead. This was the turning point which,in effect, ended all hope for the Giants. Aaron would end up with 25-40 for 362 yards and four TD's. The first half, sans the hail mary, Aaron was held in check. The second half Aaron took total control of the game.19-29 for 308 yards and two TD's with Jordy Nelson sidelined with injury. The Giants did not help themselves with mistakes. From the drops to not letting the kickoff to going out of bounds. The Giants' defense was great for most of the 1st half.Yet they were beaten and eventually dominated by the best QB. Now the Giants will have to deal with partying on the boat and failed expectations. The Packers move on to Dallas late next Sunday. The Cowboys should be able to run against Green Bay's defense. They will have to in order to keep Aaron on the sidelines.
The Steelers dominate: First kudos to Matt Moore who played well and stood tall despite taking a beating by the Steeler defense which shutdown Ajaye as well. Levon bell ran for 167 yards and was the dominant player on the field. Antonio Brown caught two TD passes on 50 yards and other 64 yards. Yet the game came down to a strip sack by James Harrison aqnd subsequent fumble recovery by Tuiit at the end of the first half. If the Dolphins scored the gap would have been 20-13 and the game might have turned out differently. Yet the Steeler defense secured victory after their offense overwhelmed Miami. Now they will play Kansas City in KC in the early Sunday game. The Chiefs will be tough and out for blood after the Steelers embarrassed them 45-14 on a Sunday night early in the season. Ben got hurt and had to wear a walking boot. Yet knowing Ben he will play.
Kudos to Matthew Stafford who play valiantly with a broken middle finger on his throwing hand. The Lions played well this season and have a bright future. The Raiders got ran over by the Texans in Houston. Jack Del Rio should not have put in Connor Cook with no experience. They should have planned better if Carr got hurt. That might be harsh and unfair to say. Yet Cook clearly was not prepared. Good luck to Houston who now have to play Brady and the Pats in prime time on Saturday night. They will need a miracle to win and might need one to stay in the game past the first half.
Take care and be well.
