We're having a curling night (I work part time as a bartender/instructor at a curling club) with some friends tomorrow night, but we don't have many close friends out here and I haven't said anything about it being my birthday. I don't like making a big deal about my birthday. Lmao they have curling clubs. Oh my goodness Canada. happy Birthday buddy! That's some funny chit right there, ain't it? I didn't even know what to ask? Like is the club cold? Do they have a Zamboni? Or... Is it really long like a bowling alley? Guessing they do it on a wood floor like bowling. Yo Saska, I honestly tried to follow it during the Olympics, cuz it looked fascinating. But the rules and strategy never got any clearer. lol EDIT: Just caught your last post, so it IS outdoors, eh? Winner buys drinks? Okay, I lose. Sorry I hit you in the head with a huge puck.

It's an indoor playing area. The ice is usually just a concrete flooring area that gets flooded and frozen over. There's a science to maintaining the ice though. I helped the ice guy at the last club I worked at. The room temperature has to be very precise and the air flow and humidity matter a lot. If things aren't ideal the ice can get sticky (too warm) or frosty (too cold) and it affects how the rocks travel along the ice. The ice also has to be perfectly level, and then once it gets scraped down and flattened, you walk along with a portable sprinkler and pebble the ice. Curling ice has little bumps all along it, which help make the rocks slide in a more predictable way. The pebble wears down throughout a game which changes how the rocks travel. Its a really difficult game because first you have to get the slide down, so you can shoot accurately. Once you figure that out, you have to figure out the weight, so the rock will stop where you want it. On top of that, the skip (one who calls the shots) has to read the ice, so when he/she calls the shot, they know how much the rock will curl. So the skip has to figure out where to aim and tells the shooter how hard to throw it, then the sweepers have to watch the rock as it goes down the ice to figure out if it's going the speed they want. If it's going too slow, they can sweep, which speeds up the rock and makes it slide straighter. The skip and shooter are also watching the line, to make sure it curls the right amount, and they will yell for the sweepers to sweep if they need to prevent it from curling too much. It requires a lot of communication and really keen eyes from all teammates. Then, consider that the ice is constantly changing due to standard wear and tear, as well as changing temperatures (from warm people running up and down the ice and other various factors) and that means everyone is constantly having to adjust how hard they need to shoot the rock on every shot. It's very complex and fascinating to me...

Yeah, had a feeling that the more ya know, the more interesting it is, kinda like baseball. Gotta say, the main reason I kept watching last time was cuz I was also fascinating by the Norwegian team's pants. Why don't more teams do this in other sports too? Seems this one is from your beloved Saskaland... I would wear those. But with a striped top.
