So I'm teaching myself Spanish. I downloaded a free app on my phone that teaches me Spanish. I decided I wanted to learn Spanish on a whim...well, not really on a whim. I'm watching Narcos on Netflix. It's a series about Pablo Escobar's rise to fame and fortune through the drug trade in Columbia in the late 80's. It's a really good show. Anyways, they speak a lot of Spanish, and I wanted to learn the language.
I took one year of Spanish in high school, and I did quite well. Well enough to remember the bare basics of basic pronouns, greetings, certain verbs, and certain masculine and feminine forms of Spanish words. If someone were to speak to me in Spanish, that would be an entirely different story though, as knowing bare basics and being fluent enough to understand someone speaking to you in a different language are entirely different.
I went to Mexico a few times when I was a teenager and was fascinated with both the country and the language. Later in life, I bought drugs from a Puerto Rican who spoke Spanish and very little English, so I had to rely heavily on what little Spanish I did know.(I don't use anymore.) When I worked at McDonald's when I was a teenager, I worked with an illegal Mexican who taught me a bunch of cuss words and vulgar phrases in Spanish.
I've always been fascinated with the Spanish language, and once I learn it, I'll have absolutely zero use for it in my day to day life, I just want to learn it because it's one of those things I promised myself that I'd do one day. They say French is the language of love. Maybe I'll go after that one if I ever have the time. For now, I just want to be able to impress my friends by being able to speak in a language they can't understand.
Me cago en tu madre.

I've always been fascinated with the Spanish language, and once I learn it, I'll have absolutely zero use for it in my day to day life Strongly disagree with this statement. Spanish is an extremely useful language to know here nowadays with the growing population of Hispanics in our country. Being fluent in Spanish is huge as far as jobs go; depending on the job, it will be way easier to get hired if you know Spanish. I took it all four years of high school and my first semester in college, but it's useless in my major (mechanical engineering) and with all the required courses in engineering, it's impossible to squeeze it in my schedule without being in school an extra semester (at least). I would love to keep learning it, and I anticipate I'll be fluent eventually. Keep at it. Now French, yeah that's useless unless you want to teach a useless language in school or visit France on a regular basis.

Can't wait to get back to this thread later. On my way to Atlantic City in 1/2 hour. I had similar experience as Jancey - took Spanish 7th - 10th grade, then 1 year in college. I think the 2 year hiatus and a year in college served as refresher than would stay with me a looooong time. Also agree it will never be useless, even in Buffalo. Been wanting to take Latin. You'll notice the root of almost all words (in a Romance language such as Spanish) are similar but diff meanings/variations in local English vernacular. If that makes no sense I'll explain later. Veni vidi vici. hehe I'd sometimes get Puerto Ricans in NYC just start talking to me in Spanish, like asking for directions or something - I probably looked Hispanic for sure. My pronunciation was totally spot on, still is. And I could rattle off, 'tres estradas antes la biblioteca'. Then they would rattle off something thinking I was fluent. And have to say 'no hablo mucho Espanol' bla bla, and they would drop their jaw. lol I have a Chicago story that would bore you, but met a Mexican who spoke little English at the time. She was working for the Mexican Consulate same floor as where I worked at an insurance agency in the Hancock building. I was maid of honor at her wedding. We're still friends.

If there was one thing I was horrible at high school, it was Spanish. I don't why, but I just couldn't get myself to understand anything during class.

If there was one thing I was horrible at high school, it was Spanish. I don't why, but I just couldn't get myself to understand anything during class. I've read that the ability to learn languages diminishes rapidly after age 10. We got (not given a choice) Italian (predominant in my area of the Bronx) in 4th thru 6th grade. I skipped 3rd grade so I was like age 8 - 10. I spoke fluent Italian, and could talk to my friend's grandma better than she could. haha And all 3 years were 'supposedly' the equivalent of 1 year high school. But learning it that young, that part of the brain is like a sponge I guess - probably why Spanish wasn't that hard, similar to Italian. Edit: nateball89 - What is this app? Can I do it on a laptop? Bought these CDs when I had Windows XP and don't work in Win 7. Can't get in touch with the company either. Never even bothered to use it until it was too late. But for free would be nice.

He just seems to realize that we are talking to him and he responds by tilting his head and smiling.
