For those who remember, the Patriots called a controversial play against the Baltimore Ravens to cover for Bryan Stork's injury, where they played 4 Offensive Lineman, with TE Michael Hoomanawanui on the line and RB Shane Vereen split wide as ineligible receivers. It was announced, but it confused the Ravens Defense as to who was eligible and who wasn't. The NFL has reportedly changed the rules to stop that from happening again. According to Mike Pereira, former vice president of officiating for the NFL, the new rule stats that "if a team sends an eligible player as ineligible, then that player must line up in the core of the formation (tackle to tackle)" Simply put, all ineligible receivers must line up in that specified area and cannot be disguised as an eligible receiver. This play will now be illegal.

Wait this was now to "cover for Bryan Stork's injury"? lol.
The really nice thing about this is you are giving Belichick even more credit than he deserves for coming up with such a genius and 100 percent legal play design. Too bad the formation has been used in college football for years and was actually used by the Jaguars earlier in the 2015 season.
I am actually amazed that you still give the Patriots credit for this.
And just for the record this is still one of the easiest formations to defend against. Switch to zone and then you dont have to worry about individual assignments. You would think a great veteran defense like the Ravens could figure that one out...

This play was invented by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2013 season. I'm not sure it was this concept exactly, but they used inelligble lineman on the LOS covering for a quick screen along the left sideline. It was a 3 lineman formation.

I have seen similar formations used in colleges for several years, so I don't think the Ravens deserve credit for it either(although that would make their complaining even funnier).
