For some reason, we get a lot of cardinals here in Western New York. Cardinals and blue jays. They like do drive my cats crazy as they perch on something outside one of my windows and my cats will go beside themselves trying to jump through the window pane to get to them. It's quite hilarious actually. I've always thought it was good luck when I see a cardinal. They're so distinguishable and recognizable and vividly red. Very handsome bird. As far as rebranding the Cardinals out there in Glendale, I don't see that they'd have any reason to unless they moved from Arizona to a new location. They just need to change that logo that so many different sports teams at all levels use.

Most places get Cardinals. Even on my balcony, after the sparrows, Mr. Cardinal is next frequent, and sometimes a wife, baby or 2 briefly. They are beautiful - I do hear them before I see them, distinctive chirp. Probably why a team chose them, they are pretty aggressive.
Cats should be careful what they wish for. Good cat/bird story...robins built a nest on top of the floodlights on my patio in Seattle. Mom and Dad put up with me, early decision as they built their nest, they'd fly past me a few feet away with mud in beaks. Babies a month old. Cat comes by and stops, looking up and nest. I'm sitting there, and IDK what to do for 2 seconds too long. Mom flies down and rides this cat's back. Funniest thing you've ever seen.

Good story Bev. I live on the San Diego River bed. (If you can call it a river). We have bird watchers from all over come explore. We have bird feeders in my yard and I feed them seed, meal worms, Nyger seed, and hummingbird sauce. Well Marlene takes care of the feeding. I just watch. We have Oriels that make a distinctive sound also. They are beautiful. We have Phoebies that are very social, and they give a great sky show. Lots of finches. But my favorites are the blue birds. Not blue Jays. Birds. They nest every year and raise two or three broods a year. They love my meal worms. We also have hawks and falcons who are beautiful but sometimes get my blue birds. The humming birds are fun. No Cardinals. Although in Hawaii they were everywhere.

Better hope PETA isn't monitoring this thread.

What's with the 'W'? Does it stand for Woodpeckers?
As far as birds here, pretty much all we get are seagulls, sparrows, pigeons, and parrots that some irresponsible pet owners probably let free. There's a high-end condo/resort complex nearby that does use birds of prey to keep the others from shatting all over the place. Very cool, actually, I saw them up close and personal while talking to their trainer. He had several species of hawk and this GIANT European owl...stands about three feet tall and was eyeing me like I was food. The local animal rights organizations were all right with it because the interloper birds generally spot the birds of prey and avoid them, thus neither getting killed nor using the area as their personal toilet.

Funny but not so funny story if you think about it: the lead singer from Creed - Scott Stapp was going through a pretty dark period in his life a few years back. He found himself in a 10th story hotel room in a really luxurious and expensive hotel in Miami. He was binging on booze and hard drugs. He was out of his mind paranoid and thought he heard the cops coming for him. He went on to the balcony and climbed over the rail in an attempt to sneak into the room next to his, like an escape scene in a movie. He lost his grip and fell ten stories down. There was this concrete contraption below, one story off the ground, that had mesh connecting it to the side of the building to catch any bird shit from falling on to the hotel's patio tables below on the ground. Stapp landed in this, and it somewhat broke his fall and ultimately saved his life. He still suffered serious injuries including a broken hip and a cracked skull. When someone found him lying there a few hours later, completely unconscious, he was COVERED in bird shit head to toe.
