The Patriots have reached an agreement with TE Aaron Hernandez on a long-term contract extension through 2018. The Patriots have both of their game-changing tight ends locked up for the foreseeable future. In June, Rob Gronkowski signed a six-year, $54 million extension that takes him through 2019. Now it's Hernandez's turn. The 22-year-old had two years and $1.115 million left on his rookie deal, but has already established himself as a unique talent at the "move" tight end spot. Last year, Hernandez piled up 79 catches for 910 yards with seven touchdowns in just 14 games. Aug 27 - 8:10 AM Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter

Patriots agreed to terms with TE Aaron Hernandez on a five-year, $40 million extension through 2018. The Pats have both of their game-changing tight ends locked up for the foreseeable future. In June, Rob Gronkowski signed a six-year, $54 million extension that takes him through 2019. Now it's Hernandez's turn. The 22-year-old had two years and $1.115 million left on his rookie deal, but has already established himself as a unique talent at the "move" tight end spot. Last year, Hernandez piled up 79 catches for 910 yards with seven touchdowns in 14 games. This $40 million extension includes a $12.5 million signing bonus and $16.4 million guaranteed. Including the two years Hernandez had left on his rookie deal, though, it's essentially a seven-year, $41.115 million pact. That's an incredibly reasonable $5.87 million annual average for the improving 22-year-old tight end. Hernandez doesn't even turn 23 until November. Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter Aug 27 - 8:10 AM
7 year, 40 million dollars??? Dunno about you but if this guy was a WR, he would be demanding 60m atleast!! love the new contract

How much you wanna bet Wes Welker is on another team next year? I think the signings of Gronk and Hernandez before him will piss him off quite a lot and he will want to leave the Pats organization. However if I were the pats I would have gone about this a similar way. Welker is an older slightly injury prone receiver, and I bet when he leaves they find someone to take his position and it might even end up being Hernandez.

The question has always been if Welker was just a system reciever.... how much would he really get on the FA market??
Anyways he leaves, I'm hoping Edelman takes his role

I wonder if Jeremy Ebert will play when Welker becomes a free agent

Think there is still a good chance Welker gets resigned but only for 2 maybe 3 years, I don't think the 2 TE contracts have a huge impact on the cap for the 1st few years, Hernandez still has the rookie deal, just that he's been extended 5 years beyond that and Gronk's deal will have essentially been a three-year, $13.17 million pact, with the 10m bonus option in 2015, that is if Welker doesn't ask for too much in guarentees (think that's what seperated them)
