Did you ever see him Play? If not how can you be sure he is the best running back in Eagles history? In order to make this team he'd have to be better than the 4th string running back LeSean McCoy. So lets compare the numbers
Van Buren: 1320 att, 5860 yards, 4.4 Y/A, 69 TD, 45 rec, 523 yards, 11.6 Y/R, 3 TD McCoy: 1309 att, 6095 yards, 4.7 Y/A, 40 TD, 293 rec, 2221 yards, 7.6 Y/R, 10 TD
McCoy have rushed for 235 more yards in 11 less attempts and has 248 more receptions for 1698 more yards.
You need to take into account what a player has done for a Franchise more than just what shows up on the statline. Steve Van Buren is a legend in Philly and a Hall of Famer. Sure, he doesn't have the numbers you expect, but he is a Hall of Famer for a reason. The NFL was also a more different game then than it is now, so comparing Van Buren to LeSean McCoy is asenine. It is a downright crime not to have Steve Van Buren on the Eagles' All Time roster. Van Buren means more to the Eagles' Franchise than McCoy, Montgomery, or even Westbrook. You look too much at stats. I have a feeling for the Steelers', you will have Eric Green, Randy Grossman, or Bennie Cunningham over Larry Brown at TE which would be a mistake. Very few pre 1950 players make my lists precisely due to how different the game was back then. As a Bears fan I left Sid Luckman, Red Grange, and Bronko Nagurski off the all time Bears team. Not because they weren't great players but because their skill sets wouldn't mesh with today's game.

Probably the greatest Philadelphia Eagle to ever play.

Not really, I don't think Van Buren is one of the 4 best running backs in Eagles history. He might be a legend and a Eagles pioneer but did he have the skills of LeSean McCoy? Answer is quite simply no

If not for moving to center he probably would have made it at LOLB You leave out legendary Hall of Famers like Chuck Bednarik and Steve Van Buren because of stats and you claim this is an "All Time Roster". That is just stupid. Concrete Charlie played in the same era as Jim Brown. Leaving those two players off because of stats is ignorant and shortsighted. You aren't giving them proper respect. I am willing to be you haven't been an NFL fan for very long.

I am willing to be you haven't been an NFL fan for very long. I can't agree more. There's really NO reason to have TWO punters and TWO kickers on the team either. If you're gonna say: "Who do I take off the roster for those two?" at their respective positions, it's not a position by position trade off. Steve Van Buren was one of the greatest players of any era, as was Bednarik. It's not as simple as to say: "Look at the raw numbers" to determine such things. The sport's history is littered with great stories and legends, if only people took the time to read some of them. For instance, Steve Van Buren's trip to the NFL Championship Game during a snowstorm... BTW - I can understand the Red Grange argument, but Bronko Nagurski was a bigger FB who also played defense. He would have been a great player regardless of era.

Gotta go with that. Van Buren is a legend. Love the George Orwell quote, btw.

Chuck Bednarik!! Too late. You do have good points as usual CoC...but it is his list, and you have to take into account eras and the skills of players nowadays. Norm Van Brocklin!! Doh...forgot Van brocklin was a cheating duck..nevermind.
