Casey got a rich deal. But my point was that if the Titans had waited on extending him, they would have had to beat the McCoy and Suh deals, since on paper, Casey was the #1 4-3 DT last year, and is on pace to be in the top 2 this year at NT. He's also getting his second contract, which is traditionally rich. This likely would have forced him to another team in FA, but by extending him early in the year, the Titans paid less than the Bucs and Lions will, instead of more, and Casey won't hit the market, which probably would have resulted in him going to the likes of Oakland or Washington.

I see where you're coming from, but this isn't one of those situations. Bad teams usually have to overpay free agents to sign with them. With McCoy, like Juggs said, even if they're overpaying him, it's completely worth it because McCoy is a top 3 DT. The production they get out of McCoy warrants a big contract. It's also good for Tampa to reward him with a contract extension now rather than wait until his contract is up and try and lowball him like the Bills have done with some of their former home grown talent and then watch those guys sign with other teams. Okay, I'll take your word for it and everyone else's, since it seems I'm in the minority, like the only one. lol Just didn't think it was that big a skill position to warrant more than half that money. Is there really THAT big a diff between a top 3 and a top 10 or even 20? RBs don't get that kind of money (unless you're a Panther), and the diff in (MY PERCEIVED) value is huge between a top 3 and top 10. But funny how that can change year to year too. Murray? Really? Martin? Sucks? Really? You normally won't see me compliment the Titans front office, but they were very smart to extend Casey before McCoy and Suh get there deals. So Casey got a lot less, eh? Suh is a household name, even if no one can spell it. He'll get paid. McCoy isn't just one of the top DTs in the league, he's one of the best overall players in the entire league. While skill position players usually do end up with the highest contracts, if you have a standout at any position, especially a player of McCoy's caliber, he's worth breaking the bank for. You want to keep your all star talent playing for you, so you lock them up.
