Everything in the NFL is susceptible to change, so my forthcoming analysis could be completely wrong at the end of the season.
The two Superbowl caliber NFC teams from recent years - the Seahawks and 49ers have looked extremely average this season. Playoff teams? Yes. Superbowl teams? Not so much. The NFC West is...meh...OK this year. The real story is in the NFC East. The Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles are taking the NFC by the balls.
The Eagles? I predicted that at the end of last season. I saw them up-trending with an extremely bright head coach who runs the no huddle offense to perfection, and an extremely intelligent young QB who's still on his way up. When the Eagles lost in the playoffs last year, my only thought was "oh, they'll be back, and in spades. That's not the end of Chip Kelly and Nick Foles." The Eagles have been one of my NFC favorites for the NFC Championship game all off season.
The Dallas Cowboys...wait, what? The Dallas fucking Cowboys? You mean the same team that can never seem to get their shit straight? The same Dallas Cowboys led by a QB who ALWAYS throws a game ending interception in big games? The same Dallas Cowboys who haven't had a run game since Emmitt Smith? The same Dallas Cowboys whose defense has been a pasta strainer since the 1990's? The same Dallas Cowboys who've choke on literally every prime time night game in the past decade? THOSE Dallas Cowboys? The Cowboys are 6-1, led by DeMarco Murray, who's on pace to eclipse the 2,000 yard mark this season, and a straight up nasty defense, led by Rod Marinelli, who has the perennial look and demeanor of someone whose wife just took a dump in his Wheaties before sleeping with the mailman. After all the jokes about Jerry Jones, the jokes about his $100 billion dollar stadium that can blast off into outer space, the jokes about Tony Romo being one the league's historically greatest late game chokers and the ludicrous contract Jones gave him, it would seem that head coach Jason Garrett has quietly steadied the ship, and has turned the Cowboys into a contender.
On a personal note, good for them. Every team deserves a resurgence. Let the bandwagon Cowboys fans all across the country come out of hiding and roam the streets proud to swear they've been there all along.
