I know there are a few that will come in here just to rib me for calling this post objective, but hear me out. I had a little help from a fellow Steeler fan over at BTSC (SBnation's Steeler site for those who don't know) in making me see things better and clear my head. Here is the article in particular if you want to read it: www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/pittsburgh-steelers-opinions-reactions-news-updates/2014/9/13/6145143/steelers-history-family-art-rooney.
This is the same comment I will post there.
After two games this season, and back-to-back 8-8 seasons, I am forced to take this Steelers team as it is right now. We are in a process of transition from one era to another. A main reason why I have been oblivious to this fact recently is because I became a Steeler fan around 2003/2004 and didn't become a "student of the game" until around 2008/2009. All I have really known as a Steeler fan is the 2000's teams that featured stars like Joey Porter, Alan Faneca, Troy Polamalu, James Farrior, James Harrison, Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, Hines Ward, Jerome Bettis, Brett Keisel, Ike Taylor, Ben Roethlisberger, and Heath Miller. That is all I have ever known as a Steeler fan. I was too young to understand football during the 90s and not even born yet to know of that bad stretch of play during the 80s.
This team is a mix of Aging stars, and young greenhorns with potential. This isn't a team that is ready to contend at the moment and probably won't be for at least 2-3 years. Is that a bad thing? No. They might be able to pull it together this season and surprise us, but I am not hoping for a miracle right now. We have potential as a group. Ben is Ben, and Antonio Brown is emerging as a Top 5 WR in the NFL right now. Our Offensive Line has oodles of potential with Pouncey and DeCastro as its core. Our D has some good young stars in the making as well with Cam Heyward, Stephon Tuitt, Ryan Shazier, Jarvis Jones, and Shamarko Thomas. However, we are still kinda clinging to the past with keeping Troy, Taylor, and Keisel in prominent roles.
The bottom line is that our team is not ready at this point, and I am okay with that. However, we have a good blueprint for the near future to work towards and get Ben his 3rd Super Bowl. We will get back there, but it might be slower than some Steeler fans are willing to wait. If you are a true Steeler fan, you should be able to wait for that magic moment that lifts us back into contention like the Pittsburgh Pirates experienced last year.
Super Bowls are by far sweeter when you wait longer in between them. No team can stay in that special group of contenders forever, so don't expect them to. This doesn't just apply to Steeler fans. This is for all fans in general. Let football be a simple release from every day life, not an obsession that controls your mood, emotions, and your daily life altogether. Football is supposed to be a game. It is fun. It is entertaining. Live life away from being a football fan.
