I wanted to start this after realizing that I was Hijacking Jeff's thread.
Jeff did a real draft where he went Wr/Wr to open in PPR and I wanted to see if that was viable. Here's my mock on FFC using the same settings.
8/25 WR/WR Mock
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So in order to get two elite WRs and still have a capable team I needed to take pick 3, 4, or 5. This way, I could select Calvin, a great receiver at the end of round 2, and still get a RB choice coming up soon to land one good runningback on my roster. The plan was then to land a steal with my 4th pick at RB or QB.
Round 1 pick 4:
Calvin Johnson
This was a no brainer. The only thing I could have changed would have been to get pick 5 or 6, but if I do that, my round 3 RB would have been worse.
Round 2 pick 21:
Antonio Brown
Brown is a lights out PPR receiver who will put up some monster games this year when he catches 12 balls or breaks out for a monster reception. I had to go Wr/Wr in this draft and this pick was between Brown or Jordy Nelson.
Round 3 pick 28:
Reggie Bush
I missed out on Doug Martin by 2 selections, that blows. I feel Reggie Bush is a talented RB2. Missing out on good RBs is why this strategy doesn't really work.
Round 4 pick 45:
Frank Gore
I had to make up for not landing a true #1, and i did so a bit by getting a second #2 basically. Gore can be counted on for consistent good production maybe more than Reggie can, without the PPR upside.
Round 5 pick 52:
Bishop Sankey
Homer alert! Just kidding, he was the best runningback left by far. Not only can Sankey fill my flex spot, he's more importantly insurance on the week runningback group I got. Drafting 3 RBs in a row has left me without an elite flex, any TE or QB after five rounds.
Round 6 pick 69:
Jeremy Maclin
Now I need to repair my flex position and add bye week depth to my two elite WRs. Maclin isn't a player I like but by the end of round 6, the guys behind him looked weak.
Round 7 pick 76:
Cam Newton
WR/WR forces you to wait on QB as well. Cam is consistently underdrafted and I'm taking him even in RB/WR openings.
Round 8 pick 93:
Kendall Wright
PPR monster, third year receiver on my favorite team, and he's my WR4. He will likely outplay maclin by year's end and become my flex.
Round 9 pick 100:
Dennis Pitta
This might be my favorite pick of the whole mock. Pitta is an absolute gorging steal in the end of the 9th round. However, he was passed up in exchange for Kyle Rudolph, Greg Olsen and Jason Witten in this mock, something that will rarely happen in better drafts.
Round 10 pick 117:
Carolina DST
Defenses were flying off the board, and I took the Panthers as the sixth selected even though they are in my opinion #2 after SEA and SF.
Round 11 pick 124:
Chris Ivory
I don't like this pick but there was nothing left at RB. CJ2K is going to eat up the Jets receptions in the rare cases where Geno gets it to any RB in the flat. Ivory is not a good RB4 but I had little choice because I tried to make my starters (DST/TE) very good.
Round 12 pick 141:
Carson Palmer
Backup QBs were absolutely flying and Palmer was the only half decent option left, and I don't think he's any good either. Other choices were Tannehill, Manziel and Eli Manning. I like Arizona's WRs a lot this year, so I took Palmer.
Round 13 pick 148:
Steve Smith
I took Smith, along with Pitta earlier, and Flacco as my third QB next round. I like Baltimore's passing game this year to be good.
Round 14 pick 165:
Joe Flacco
Carson isn't a good enough backup to run no emergency QB. Flacco and Palmer will compete for the backup job and one will be cut to add a kicker later.
Round 15 pick 172:
James White
The Patriots presumed RB3 this year, I like Whtie as a fantasy deep sleeper, and he was actually the second highest runningback left, which just shows how deep a 12 team draft goes in the last round. White will be fighting with Palmer and Flacco for a roster spot. One will be cut for a kicker.
Final depth chart:
QB: Cam Newton
RB1: Reggie Bush
RB2: Frank Gore
WR1: Calvin Johnson
WR2: Antonio Brown
TE: Dennis Pitta
Flex: Bishop Sankey
K:
DST: Carolina
BENCH
QB: Carson Palmer, Joe Flacco
RB: Chris Ivory, James White
WR: Kendall Wright, Steve Smith
Overall this starting roster looks stacked, but the runningbacks are way too weak becaues I took them in rounds 3,4,and 5. As a result, I had to use my mid round picks on DST, TE, and QB, leaving me with very suspect depth other than Kendall Wright, whom I was lucky to even get. I think this team is borderline playoffs and entirely depends on how many games my receivers carry me for.
I say the WR/WR build is generally not viable, even under the best circumstances. It's not consistent enough, and it leaves too many holes in the rest of your team. This is the kind of thing I hope my opponents do so that I can exploit the talent they will leave on the board at RB and TE.
