Phelps just had a rough time before the last year or 2...had to lose 25 pounds and get back to training and working out..nobody expected him to do good this year.

If Phelps had trained as hard as the other swimmers over the last 4 years I have no doubt he would still be the best. He just didn't' have the drive. It has got to be hard to stay determined after achieving more than anybody in the history of the sport. Well I'm pretty sure for 3 years after 2008, he thought he was retired, as did everybody else. So he didn't even TRY training for these Olympics. Then 10 months ago he decided he just wanted to give it another go, which left him behind his competitors that had been training for the last four years. Really it shows how great of a swimmer he is, to not even train for swimming for 3 whole years, and still be able to compete with the world's very best.
