Well when your only participating in one event per olympics, it's not that impressive that he was in 5 olympics. Swimming takes way more endurance than rowing, and quite frankly Phelps was more dominant at his sport imo. So many easy Olympic gold medals to be won aren't there? It's a shame the big nations like the U.S.A, Canada, China, Australia, and Germany don't have strong and long-running traditions in the sport. Oh! They do! Phelps did dominate, for a time. Just like Weissmuller, Spitz, and Thorpe did before him. In 4 or 8 years time there will be someone new who will be 'The Greatest Ever'. 50, or even 20, years from now people will have forgotten Phelps. I believe that Steve Redgrave's name will still be there. It's a Brett Favre/Cal Ripken, Jr. type of legend. I'd feel the same way if he wasn't British.

I'm sorry. That's way more antagonistic than it was meant to be. Phelps is a great athlete and I understand your pride in Michigan. Phelps record is such because his sport offers him the opportunity to win multiple medals and his participation in each event doesn't have a great draining effect on the others. Winning an Olympic endurance event, (rather than in a skill event such as archery), for 5 Olympics in a row is a unique thing, even if it was as part of a team or partnership.

The title of "greatest ever" doesn't just get thrown around. It's given to people who have earned it, and rightfully so. There isn't a new "greatest ever" every 1 or 2 Olympics. Phelps was dominant his whole career, not just for a time. He has kept up his dominance longer than the swimmers you mentioned. He has twice as many gold medals as anybody, and 4 more combined medals. His medal record won't be broken for a long time, and I'll go out on a limb and say his gold medal record might never be broken. He will be considered the greatest by the majority of the world for a good while, if not forever. Nobody is even close to his records. Fwiw, I'd put Carl Lewis, Paavo Nurmi, Ray Ewry, Mark Spitz, and a few more people over Redgrave. People aren't going to forget Phelps. I don't see how anyone could logically think that.

I understand that, and I'm not just saying "he's the best because he has the most medals", or "he's the greatest because he went to UM (university of Michigan)" I recognize Olympians that aren't swimmers don't have the chance to gain as much medals. That is like saying Brett Favre is the greatest QB just because he has the most everything, but he is far from the greatest QB. I do think Phelps is the greatest, but I think a great case can be made for Carl Lewis, Paavo Nurmi, Ray Ewry, and MAYBE Usain Bolt if he can keep his dominance for at least one more Olympic. (Maybe a few other people too that I am forgetting.) Redgrave may be the greatest at his sport, but honestly I just don't see a case as him for the GOAT. Just my opinion.

The defender didn't reach out to touch the ball... I didn't think Canada would win, that game was a big surprise The second girl did NOT hand ball it IMHO, but the first one did. She had her elbow stuck out, and it hit her. The penalty was questionable.. But it was made even more questionable by all the HORRIBLE calls that the ref was calling Americas way.. There were at least 5 corners that should have just been goal kicks for Canada! One ball was out of bounds completely and they let the play continue! On another the American girl clearly headed it directly out of bounds and again they got a corner. The frustration of that penalty was just the culmination of a horrible game called all over purely in favor of America! If you don't believe it was called in Americas favor you are oblivious or a liar! I saw so many week ass penalties called on our girls and I saw girls from America take out our girls legs without touching the ball plenty of times! I understand some games just happen like that but this was out of control! and The penalty was questionable at best! they weren't reaching out to block the ball with their arms in fact they were attempting to tuck them in! especially the second girl who had her arms tucked and was just trying to cover her face! I'm not saying Canada would have won had that game been called fairly, but it would have been nice to see equal calls for both sides..
