From the Saints offseason thread - Can I choose an avatar for you now, Morkim? I would say yeah, but I already saw your avatar. So I'm gonna say we didn't finalize any agreements. Also: he'll still get WR money.

Okay, if Graham won his case and was tagged as a WR, does that mean we'd have to pay him a minimum of 12 mil a year? But since he was tagged as a TE, that just means we aren't forced to pay him the 12 mil, and could settle for less should Graham agree to that. Is that right?

If he'd won the appeal, and you didn't give him a long term deal this year, his one year contract would be the 11 million number. Since he lost his appeal, if he plays on the tag and you don't get a deal done, he only makes the 6 million this year. The franchise tag has no impact on any long term deal now or in the future. His contract will be as high as NO is willing to pay and as low as Jimmy will accept. So he will still get paid like a top 5 WR, because he's by far your best weapon and he's worth top WR money.

Then why go through the whole "WR vs TE" franchise tag thing if he might get paid like a WR anyways?

Then why go through the whole "WR vs TE" franchise tag thing if he might get paid like a WR anyways? Because of the whole Franchise Tag deal. Jimmy Graham cannot control that so he wanted to be listed as a WR so he would get more money. Also, Graham's argument was kinda flimsy when you think about it. Charlie Casserly was on ESPN just now and he put it in a very good way. So Jimmy Graham said he was a WR because he played 67% (or whatever it was) of his snaps in the slot? Well that means he is playing 33% next to the tackle and how many WRs do you see even spend one snap a game right next to the tackle? None. Graham is a TE. Simple as that.

What I am saying is, I don't understand why it matters what he is tagged, and why he put up such a fight to not be tagged as a TE since he might get WR money anyways. If I'm getting this right, it seems to me like what you are tagged as doesn't matter at all since he could still get the money he desires while being tagged as a TE.
