Glad they were better than what I expected. I'm more optimist about the cup now.

We root for our womans team And I just said they won't win a game so a tie counts as not winning in my books. I am a Germany fan first and for most, then Russia because my grandparents were from Germany and Russia on my Dads side. I guess you're not a fan of James Bond. I am also English, Irish and Scottish.. As well as Hungarian.. I am one giant mutt..

That was an exciting opening match! Did anyone else watch? Brazil owned most of the game, but Croatia's defence kept them at bay until a really poor call by the ref gave Brazil a penalty shot midway through the second half to take the lead 2-1. After that Croatia pushed to equalize and Brazil caught them off guard with a quick counter to make it 3-1.
Take home messages for me: 1) Brazil has a ton of talent 2) Brazil was extra Whitney and extra divey today... Makes me root against them. Goooo Mexico & Cameroon! 3) Croatia's defence was quite good, even though the team as a whole was completely outmatched. Cameroon and Mexico are two offensive minded teams with far less talent than Brazil... It Croatia plays the same way against those two teams, they could definitely move on to the next round. 4) Croatia's keeper is awkward. He made some nice saves, but he had really shaky hands and poor range. Both the first and third goals likely would have been saved by one of the elite keepers in the tournament. The first goal he just wasn't able to extend all the way and the third goal he reacted too slowly and also didn't extend well. Even the penalty shot goal he dove the right way and got his hands on the shot, but his hands were too flimsy and the ball basically went right through them. If Julio Caesar was in net for Croatia, that might have been a 1-1 game instead of 3-1. I play keeper often, so I am generally quick to defend them rather than blame them... But this time I think he did not play well.

The only way they could score on him was to take shots like that. He should have defended the penalty though

I agree, the Keeper lost them the game, despite the less talented roster. Are these even real things?

They were whining a lot and embellishing like crazy. Marcello was the worst by far. I felt bad for him for the unfortunate deflection that lead to an own goal, but after watching him play for another 15 minutes, I was glad it happened to him.

That's for sure. But as a top caliber keeper, those probably should have been saved. Neymar's shot was quite slow, even if it was perfectly placed, and from quite far away. The keeper should have had plenty of time to take one more shuffle step over before diving. Oscars shot shouldn't have even been out of reach, but rather than diving the keeper just fell over.. He reacted late and seemed to be caught somewhat flat footed.
