I think they're kind of ruining pokemon with the mega evolutions, personally. Nevertheless, I'm excited. Hoenn is my favorite region and I'm pretty happy R/S are getting a remake.
I also really hope they do a Emerald remake.

I think they said it would be pretty much the same story (or at least the same region) but I am guessing they will do more with Steven and/or Wally and possibly update the story as they have updated Groudon and Kyogre.

I have a DS, or GBA/gbc For GBA, you should try Fire Red or Leaf Green, which are really good remakes of the original Red and Blue versions (except Leaf Green is a remake of the Green version which was never released in America.

MorkimThere are a couple good emulators out there as well where you can play the games without having to buy them for your system (at least up till Game Boy Advance). Here is one I use: game-oldies.com/

I have a DS, or GBA/gbc I would play Heart Gold or Soul Silver if I were you they are on DS and are remakes of Siler and Gold. On the original gameboy, Silver and Gold came after Yellow. You could also go for Fire Red or Leaf Green which were remakes of the original Red and Blue and those are on GBA. Ruby or Saphire or Emerald are also good ways to go on GBA.. But my recommendation would be Heart Gold or Soul Silver on DS.

Like CoC and Jin said, Leaf Green and Fire Red are remakes of Red and Blue. Those are on the game boy advanced though, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to find those games anymore, honestly. Last time I went to gamestop, I didn't see any Gameboy games for sale. Emulators are probably the best way to go for Gameboy games now. If you want a relatively new Pokemon game, I'd recommend Platinum. That's the best Pokemon game that was released for the DS in my opinion. (that's excluding X and Y, since the 3DS is pretty much a different system than the original DS.)
