"Have you ever had a friend that was really cool, intelligent, fun to be around, and very open-minded but at the same time called a black person every once in a while, (not to their face) a nigger? What, are they the worst person on the Earth now and deserve to be ostracized for their opinion? WTF, it's their opinion. If you don't like it, you don't need to go around campaigning, (especially as a white person), and treat them like the worst person on Earth for eternity." - Beast. (sorry for the lazy quote)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I live in a state with an enormous white majority and a small, but located around me, population of Africans (literally moved here from Africa, most are not citizens), who face racial persecution from the white rural community. The situation you describe has happened more times than you can count, and every single time, I side with the person being called the N word. Typically, I would call my white "friend" a douche or a racist and I would judge them that way, because I judge people by their actions. To clarify, I am a white, non-liberal, 18 year old, but I find racism more disgusting than someone eating out of toilet.
Rural raised kids suddenly interacting with very dark skinned people for the first time, who often aren't assimilated to american culture, or if they are, are basically walking stereotypes like you'd see in L.A. doesn't usually go well. Nigger, cracker, white bread, negro get thrown around a lot, and I witnessed a fight between a Sicillian white guy and an African from Kansas end with four boys in the ICU. I broke up that fight and had my nose broken by a drunk white kid doing so.
The people who stand up to racial injustices are of all political parties, are of all races, and we're not going to stop. I won't treat a racist like "the worst person on Earth for eternity", in your words, but I'm not going to "associate with them", in Sterling's words. In my high school there is a clique of kids known as "border patrol", who all grew up on farms and are racists. These people are ostracized by the forward thinking majority. Sterling is "border patrol" to me. And I'm not inviting him to a party because I don't want him there.
And most importantly, the "opinion" defense is cowardly. Having free speech means that if you say stupid things and express racist views, you will be socially judged by your opinions. The fact that it is your opinion gives you absolutely no defense. In fact, it is more damning, because your opinion is supposed to be the vocal expression of who you are.

Umm is that even legal? He was in his home, I believe, and he was being recorded? And he's getting fined $2.5M for something he said in a private conversation with his girlfriend? It's not like he went out in public and started insulting black people. He was having a private conversation in his home and was being recorded without his knowledge. And because of what he said in this private conversation that he said to no one other than his girlfriend, he's being fined $2.5M, being forced to sell the organization, ya know, the organization he bought, and banned. Do I agree with what he said? No, of course not. I hate that racism is still a problem. And I second what MO said about growing up in that time doesn't give you a free pass to be racist. It most certainly does not. But the fact is, this was a private conversation, a conversation he had in his home, with one other person, and he was recorded without his knowledge, and he's getting the punishment he's getting. And the fact that everyone thinks that this is all okay and great really bothers me.

JuggsThen my statement doesn't apply to you, since you claim that you're not a liberal.

I'm cool with the guy being shunned and fined etc. Because the NBA wants the country to know they don't want to associate with that kind of person. But why are more people not talking about how NOT OK it is that this all became public in the first place?

This is why I continuously bash liberals. They are so aggressive regarding racism, ecological issues, and religion but don't nearly care about anything else. They are so short-sighted, highly-judgmental, and annoying.

The NBA did not ask for it to go public. The thing with the recording being "legal" or not will be between Sterling and the girl. The NBA has to deal with what Sterling said, so bringing up the legality of the posting of the tape is a non-issue in regards to the punishment the NBA gave.
Private or not, Sterling gave his views that do not coincide with what the NBA (or anyone) wants, so he had to deal with the consequences. He has had a long history of racial issues in the past as well, so let's not act shocked that this came out. But with the NBA getting actual evidence this time, they took action.

Ive never even hears of the guy and I strongly dislike him from what I heard on the tape, but this was a PRIVATE CONVERSATION in HIS HOME. If he went out and said that crap on the court, sure, by all means, ban him, fine him. But he didn't. This was a private conversation in his home. The NBA has no right to punish him for what he said. And really no one is talking about how this was an illegal recording.

Because most of the coverage I see is African Americans speaking their mind. IDK though, I watched the Voice so maybe I'm not caught up on the white liberal agenda.

That's what I said when you replied to my first post. You pulled an even worse version of Saska, instead of picking a choosing quotes, you completely changed my words to your liking and whatnot. I wasn't even going to reply to that.
